Enhancement of the electron spin polarization in a correlated two-layer two-dimensional electron system at a total Landau level filling factor of one is reported. Using resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance, we demonstrate that the electron spin polarization of two closely-spaced two-dimensional electron systems becomes maximized when inter-layer Coulomb correlations establish spontaneous isospin ferromagnetic order. This correlation-driven polarization dominates over the spin polarizations of competing single-layer fractional Quantum Hall states under electron density imbalances.

Two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are studied in the the filling-factor range 2<v<3. We find both theoretical and experimental evidence of a collective many-body phenomenon, where a fraction of the trapped electrons form an incompressible spin-droplet on the highest occupied Landau level. The phenomenon occurs only when the number of electrons in the quantum dot is larger than ~30. We find the onset of the spin-droplet regime at v=5/2. This proposes a finite-geometry alternative to the Moore-Read-type Pfaffian state of the bulk two-dimensional electron gas. Hence, the spin-droplet formation may be related to the observed fragility of the v=5/2 quantum Hall state in narrow quantum point contacts.

Spin-flip excitations in a quantum Hall electron system at fixed filling factor nu=2 are modelled and studied under conditions of a strong Coulomb interaction when the `Landau level mixing is a dominant factor determining the excitation energy. The `one-exciton approach used for the purely electronic excitations in question allows us to describe the Stoner transition from the unpolarized/paramgnet state to the polarized/ferromagnet one. The theoretical results are compared with the available experimental data.

We investigate the magnetic response in the quantized spin Hall (SH) phase of layered-honeycomb lattice system with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling lambda_SO and on-site Hubbard U. The response is characterized by a parameter g= 4 U a^2 d / 3, where a and d are the lattice constant and interlayer distance, respectively. When g< (sigma_{xy}^{s2} mu)^{-1}, where sigma_{xy}^{s} is the quantized spin Hall conductivity and mu is the magnetic permeability, the magnetic field inside the sample oscillates spatially. The oscillation vanishes in the non-interacting limit U -> 0. When g > (sigma_{xy}^{s2} mu)^{-1}, the system shows perfect diamagnetism, i.e., the Meissner effect occurs. We find that superlattice structure with large lattice constant is favorable to see these phenomena. We also point out that, as a result of Zeeman coupling, the topologically-protected helical edge states shows weak diamagnetism which is independent of the parameter g.

We study a two-dimensional electron system where the electrons occupy two conduction band valleys with anisotropic Fermi contours and strain-tunable occupation. We observe persistent quantum Hall states at filling factors $ u = 1/3$ and 5/3 even at zero strain when the two valleys are degenerate. This is reminiscent of the quantum Hall ferromagnet formed at $ u = 1$ in the same system at zero strain. In the absence of a theory for a system with anisotropic valleys, we compare the energy gaps measured at $ u = 1/3$ and 5/3 to the available theory developed for single-valley, two-spin systems, and find that the gaps and their rates of rise with strain are much smaller than predicted.

Resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance is used to measure the Knight shift of the As nuclei and determine the electron spin polarization of the fractional quantum Hall states of the second Landau level. We show that the 5/2 state is fully polarized within experimental error, thus confirming a fundamental assumption of the Moore-Read theory. We measure the electron heating under radio frequency excitation, and show that we are able to detect NMR at electron temperatures down to 30 mK.
