We consider a multi-dimensional model of a compressible fluid in a bounded domain. We want to estimate the density and velocity of the fluid, based on the observations for only velocity. We build an observer exploiting the symmetries of the fluid dynamics laws. Our main result is that for the linearised system with full observations of the velocity field, we can find an observer which converges to the true state of the system at any desired convergence rate for finitely many but arbitrarily large number of Fourier modes. Our one-dimensional numerical results corroborate the results for the linearised, fully observed system, and also show similar convergence for the full nonlinear system and also for the case when the velocity field is observed only over a subdomain.

Data assimilation methodologies are designed to incorporate noisy observations of a physical system into an underlying model in order to infer the properties of the state of the system. Filters refer to a class of data assimilation algorithms designed to update the estimation of the state in a on-line fashion, as data is acquired sequentially. For linear problems subject to Gaussian noise filtering can be performed exactly using the Kalman filter. For nonlinear systems it can be approximated in a systematic way by particle filters. However in high dimensions these particle filtering methods can break down. Hence, for the large nonlinear systems arising in applications such as weather forecasting, various ad hoc filters are used, mostly based on making Gaussian approximations. The purpose of this work is to study the properties of these ad hoc filters, working in the context of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. By working in this infinite dimensional setting we provide an analysis which is useful for understanding high dimensional filtering, and is robust to mesh-refinement. We describe theoretical results showing that, in the small observational noise limit, the filters can be tuned to accurately track the signal itself (filter stability), provided the system is observed in a sufficiently large low dimensional space; roughly speaking this space should be large enough to contain the unstable modes of the linearized dynamics. Numerical results are given which illustrate the theory. In a simplified scenario we also derive, and study numerically, a stochastic PDE which determines filter stability in the limit of frequent observations, subject to large observational noise. The positive results herein concerning filter stability complement recent numerical studies which demonstrate that the ad hoc filters perform poorly in reproducing statistical variation about the true signal.
The energy equalities of compressible Navier-Stokes equations with general pressure law and degenerate viscosities are studied. By using a unified approach, we give sufficient conditions on the regularity of weak solutions for these equalities to hold. The method of proof is suitable for the case of periodic as well as homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In particular, by a careful analysis using the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, no boundary layer assumptions are required when dealing with bounded domains with boundary.
We construct forward self-similar solutions (expanders) for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Some of these self-similar solutions are smooth, while others exhibit a singularity do to cavitation at the origin.

In this paper we consider the barotropic compressible quantum Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent viscosity and its limit when the scaled Planck constant vanish. Following recent works on degenerate compressible Navier-Stokes equations, we prove the global existence of weak solutions by the use of a singular pressure close to vacuum. With such singular pressure, we can use the standard definition of global weak solutions which also allows to justify the limit when the scaled Planck constant denoted by $epsilon$ tends to 0.
This paper is dedicated to the construction of global weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equation, for any initial value with bounded energy and entropy. The construction is uniform with respect to the Planck constant. This allows to perform the semi-classical limit to the associated compressible Navier-Stokes equation. One of the difficulty of the problem is to deal with the degenerate viscosity, together with the lack of integrability on the velocity. Our method is based on the construction of weak solutions that are renormalized in the velocity variable. The existence, and stability of these solutions do not need the Mellet-Vasseur inequality.
