Multiple accesses are common for most mobile devices today. This technological advance opens up a new design space for improving the communication performance of mobile devices. Multipath TCP is a TCP extension that enables using multiple network paths between two end systems for a single TCP connection, increasing performance and reliability. Meanwhile, when operating multiple active interfaces, multipath-TCP also consumes substantial more power and drains out bettery faster than using one interface. Thus, enabling Multipath TCP on mobile devices brings in new challenges. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the underlying design choices given by the Multipath TCP. In particular, we theoretically formulate the rela- tion between performance (throughput) and energy consumption for Multipath TCP. We find that sometime the throughput and energy consumption can be concurrently improved.

We develop analytical models for estimating the energy spent by stations (STAs) in infrastructure WLANs when performing TCP controlled file downloads. We focus on the energy spent in radio communication when the STAs are in the Continuously Active Mode (CAM), or in the static Power Save Mode (PSM). Our approach is to develop accurate models for obtaining the fraction of times the STA radios spend in idling, receiving and transmitting. We discuss two traffic models for each mode of operation: (i) each STA performs one large file download, and (ii) the STAs perform short file transfers. We evaluate the rate of STA energy expenditure with long file downloads, and show that static PSM is worse than just using CAM. For short file downloads we compute the number of file downloads that can be completed with given battery capacity, and show that PSM performs better than CAM for this case. We provide a validation of our analytical models using the NS-2 simulator. In contrast to earlier work on analytical modeling of PSM, our models that capture the details of the interactions between the 802.11 MAC in PSM and certain aspects of TCP.

Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is a transport layer protocol that allows network devices to transfer data over multiple concurrent paths, and hence, utilizes the network resources more effectively than does the traditional single-path TCP. However, as a reliable protocol, MPTCP still needs to deliver data packets (to the upper application) at the receiver in the same order they are transmitted at the sender. The out-of-order packet problem becomes more severe for MPTCP due to the heterogeneous nature of delay and bandwidth of each path. In this paper, we propose the forward-delay-based packet scheduling (FDPS) algorithm for MPTCP to address that problem. The main idea is that the sender dispatches packets via concurrent paths according to their estimated forward delay and throughput differences. Via simulations with various network conditions, the results show that our algorithm significantly maintains in-order arrival packets at the receiver compared with several previous algorithms.
Wireless visual sensor networks (VSNs) are expected to play a major role in future IEEE 802.15.4 personal area networks (PAN) under recently-established collision-free medium access control (MAC) protocols, such as the IEEE 802.15.4e-2012 MAC. In such environments, the VSN energy consumption is affected by the number of camera sensors deployed (spatial coverage), as well as the number of captured video frames out of which each node processes and transmits data (temporal coverage). In this paper, we explore this aspect for uniformly-formed VSNs, i.e., networks comprising identical wireless visual sensor nodes connected to a collection node via a balanced cluster-tree topology, with each node producing independent identically-distributed bitstream sizes after processing the video frames captured within each network activation interval. We derive analytic results for the energy-optimal spatio-temporal coverage parameters of such VSNs under a-priori known bounds for the number of frames to process per sensor and the number of nodes to deploy within each tier of the VSN. Our results are parametric to the probability density function characterizing the bitstream size produced by each node and the energy consumption rates of the system of interest. Experimental results reveal that our analytic results are always within 7% of the energy consumption measurements for a wide range of settings. In addition, results obtained via a multimedia subsystem show that the optimal spatio-temporal settings derived by the proposed framework allow for substantial reduction of energy consumption in comparison to ad-hoc settings. As such, our analytic modeling is useful for early-stage studies of possible VSN deployments under collision-free MAC protocols prior to costly and time-consuming experiments in the field.
The ever-continuing explosive growth of on-demand content requests has imposed great pressure on mobile/wireless network infrastructures. To ease congestion in the network and increase perceived user experience, caching popular content closer to the end-users can play a significant role and as such this issue received significant attention over the last few years. Additionally, energy efficiency is treated as a fundamental requirement in the design of next-generation mobile networks. However, there has been little attention to the overlapping area between energy efficiency and network caching especially when considering multipath routing. To this end, this paper proposes an energy-efficient caching with multipath routing support. The proposed scheme provides a joint anchoring of popular content into a set of potential caching nodes with optimized multi-path support whilst ensuring a balance between transmission and caching energy cost. The proposed model also considers different content delivery modes, such as multicast and unicast. Two separated Integer-Linear Programming (ILP) models are formulated for each delivery mode. To tackle the curse of dimensionality we then provide a greedy simulated annealing algorithm, which not only reduces the time complexity but also provides a competitive performance as ILP models. A wide set of numerical investigations has shown that the proposed scheme is more energy-efficient compared with other widely used approaches in caching under the premise of network resource limitation.
The enormous power consumption of Bitcoin has led to undifferentiated discussions in science and practice about the sustainability of blockchain and distributed ledger technology in general. However, blockchain technology is far from homogeneous - not only with regard to its applications, which now go far beyond cryptocurrencies and have reached businesses and the public sector, but also with regard to its technical characteristics and, in particular, its power consumption. This paper summarizes the status quo of the power consumption of various implementations of blockchain technology, with special emphasis on the recent Bitcoin Halving and so-called zk-rollups. We argue that although Bitcoin and other proof-of-work blockchains do indeed consume a lot of power, alternative blockchain solutions with significantly lower power consumption are already available today, and new promising concepts are being tested that could further reduce in particular the power consumption of large blockchain networks in the near future. From this we conclude that although the criticism of Bitcoins power consumption is legitimate, it should not be used to derive an energy problem of blockchain technology in general. In many cases in which processes can be digitised or improved with the help of more energy-efficient blockchain variants, one can even expect net energy savings.
