The cross-media retrieval problem has received much attention in recent years due to the rapid increasing of multimedia data on the Internet. A new approach to the problem has been raised which intends to match features of different modalities directly. In this research, there are two critical issues: how to get rid of the heterogeneity between different modalities and how to match the cross-modal features of different dimensions. Recently metric learning methods show a good capability in learning a distance metric to explore the relationship between data points. However, the traditional metric learning algorithms only focus on single-modal features, which suffer difficulties in addressing the cross-modal features of different dimensions. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal similarity learning algorithm for the cross-modal feature matching. The proposed method takes a bilinear formulation, and with the nuclear-norm penalization, it achieves low-rank representation. Accordingly, the accelerated proximal gradient algorithm is successfully imported to find the optimal solution with a fast convergence rate O(1/t^2). Experiments on three well known image-text cross-media retrieval databases show that the proposed method achieves the best performance compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a cross-modal variational auto-encoder (CMVAE) for content-based micro-video background music recommendation. CMVAE is a hierarchical Bayesian generative model that matches relevant background music to a micro-video by projecting these two multimodal inputs into a shared low-dimensional latent space, where the alignment of two corresponding embeddings of a matched video-music pair is achieved by cross-generation. Moreover, the multimodal information is fused by the product-of-experts (PoE) principle, where the semantic information in visual and textual modalities of the micro-video are weighted according to their variance estimations such that the modality with a lower noise level is given more weights. Therefore, the micro-video latent variables contain less irrelevant information that results in a more robust model generalization. Furthermore, we establish a large-scale content-based micro-video background music recommendation dataset, TT-150k, composed of approximately 3,000 different background music clips associated to 150,000 micro-videos from different users. Extensive experiments on the established TT-150k dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. A qualitative assessment of CMVAE by visualizing some recommendation results is also included.
The success of a cross-sectional systematic strategy depends critically on accurately ranking assets prior to portfolio construction. Contemporary techniques perform this ranking step either with simple heuristics or by sorting outputs from standard regression or classification models, which have been demonstrated to be sub-optimal for ranking in other domains (e.g. information retrieval). To address this deficiency, we propose a framework to enhance cross-sectional portfolios by incorporating learning-to-rank algorithms, which lead to improvements of ranking accuracy by learning pairwise and listwise structures across instruments. Using cross-sectional momentum as a demonstrative case study, we show that the use of modern machine learning ranking algorithms can substantially improve the trading performance of cross-sectional strategies -- providing approximately threefold boosting of Sharpe Ratios compared to traditional approaches.
Entity linking is an important problem with many applications. Most previous solutions were designed for settings where annotated training data is available, which is, however, not the case in numerous domains. We propose a light-weight and scalable entity linking method, Eigenthemes, that relies solely on the availability of entity names and a referent knowledge base. Eigenthemes exploits the fact that the entities that are truly mentioned in a document (the gold entities) tend to form a semantically dense subset of the set of all candidate entities in the document. Geometrically speaking, when representing entities as vectors via some given embedding, the gold entities tend to lie in a low-rank subspace of the full embedding space. Eigenthemes identifies this subspace using the singular value decomposition and scores candidate entities according to their proximity to the subspace. On the empirical front, we introduce multiple strong baselines that compare favorably to the existing state of the art. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets from a variety of real-world domains showcase the effectiveness of our approach.
Due to the rapid development of mobile Internet techniques, cloud computation and popularity of online social networking and location-based services, massive amount of multimedia data with geographical information is generated and uploaded to the Internet. In this paper, we propose a novel type of cross-modal multimedia retrieval called geo-multimedia cross-modal retrieval which aims to search out a set of geo-multimedia objects based on geographical distance proximity and semantic similarity between different modalities. Previous studies for cross-modal retrieval and spatial keyword search cannot address this problem effectively because they do not consider multimedia data with geo-tags and do not focus on this type of query. In order to address this problem efficiently, we present the definition of $k$NN geo-multimedia cross-modal query at the first time and introduce relevant conceptions such as cross-modal semantic representation space. To bridge the semantic gap between different modalities, we propose a method named cross-modal semantic matching which contains two important component, i.e., CorrProj and LogsTran, which aims to construct a common semantic representation space for cross-modal semantic similarity measurement. Besides, we designed a framework based on deep learning techniques to implement common semantic representation space construction. In addition, a novel hybrid indexing structure named GMR-Tree combining geo-multimedia data and R-Tree is presented and a efficient $k$NN search algorithm called $k$GMCMS is designed. Comprehensive experimental evaluation on real and synthetic dataset clearly demonstrates that our solution outperforms the-state-of-the-art methods.
It is widely acknowledged that learning joint embeddings of recipes with images is challenging due to the diverse composition and deformation of ingredients in cooking procedures. We present a Multi-modal Semantics enhanced Joint Embedding approach (MSJE) for learning a common feature space between the two modalities (text and image), with the ultimate goal of providing high-performance cross-modal retrieval services. Our MSJE approach has three unique features. First, we extract the TFIDF feature from the title, ingredients and cooking instructions of recipes. By determining the significance of word sequences through combining LSTM learned features with their TFIDF features, we encode a recipe into a TFIDF weighted vector for capturing significant key terms and how such key terms are used in the corresponding cooking instructions. Second, we combine the recipe TFIDF feature with the recipe sequence feature extracted through two-stage LSTM networks, which is effective in capturing the unique relationship between a recipe and its associated image(s). Third, we further incorporate TFIDF enhanced category semantics to improve the mapping of image modality and to regulate the similarity loss function during the iterative learning of cross-modal joint embedding. Experiments on the benchmark dataset Recipe1M show the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.
