Galvanic replacement reactions on metal nanoparticles are often used for the preparation of hollow nanostructures with tunable porosity and chemical composition, leading to tailored optical and catalytic properties. However, the precise interplay between the three-dimensional (3D) morphology and chemical composition of nanostructures during Galvanic replacement is not always well understood as the 3D chemical imaging of nanoscale materials is still challenging. It is especially far from straightforward to obtain detailed information from the inside of hollow nanostructures using electron microscopy techniques such as SEM or TEM. We demonstrate here that a combination of state-of-the-art EDX mapping with electron tomography results in the unambiguous determination of both morphology transformation and elemental composition of nanostructures in 3D, during Galvanic replacement of Ag nanocubes. This work provides direct and unambiguous experimental evidence leading to new insights in the understanding of the galvanic replacement reaction. In addition, the powerful approach presented here can be applied to a wide range of nanoscale transformation processes, which will undoubtedly guide the development of novel nanostructures.

Solid-state dewetting phenomenon in silver thin films offers a straightforward method to obtain structures having controlled shape or size -this latter in principle spanning several orders of magnitudes -- with potentially strong interest in many applications involving high-tech industry and biomedicine. In this work nanostructured silver is deposited by pulsed electron ablation technique and its surface modified upon thermal treatments in air at increasing temperatures. Surface chemistry and morphology are then monitored simultaneously by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy; in particular, the power spectral density of surface heights is used to analyze the alteration of morphology induced by annealing. It is shown that this approach adds a level of information about the dewetting process since it allows to separate between long- and short-range surface behavior and to retrieve statistical quantities relevant to a description of the features in view of applications. Our results are presented in the framework of a multidisciplinary approach, advantages and limits of which are deepened and discussed.
Plasmonics applications have been extending into the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unfortunately the commonly used noble metals have intrinsic optical properties that limit their use above 350 nm. Aluminum is probably the most suitable material for UV plasmonics and in this work we show that nanoporous aluminum can be prepared starting from an alloy of Mg3Al2. The porous metal is obtained by means of a galvanic replacement reaction. Such a nanoporous metal can be exploited to achieve a plasmonic material for enhanced UV Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence. Thanks to the large surface to volume ratio this material represents a powerful platform for promoting interaction between plasmonic substrates and molecules in the UV.
Scanning nanofocus X-ray diffraction (nXRD) performed at a synchrotron is used for the first time to simultaneously probe the morphology and the structural properties of spin-coated CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) perovskite films for photovoltaic devices. MAPI films are spin-coated on a Si/SiO2/PEDOT:PSS substrate held at different temperatures during the deposition in order to tune the perovskite film coverage, and then investigated by nXRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scatter-ing (GI-WAXS). The advantages of nXRD over SEM and GI-WAXS are dis-cussed. A method to visualize, selectively isolate, and structurally charac-terize single perovskite grains buried within a complex, polycrystalline film is developed. The results of nXRD measurements are correlated with solar cell device measurements, and it is shown that spin-coating the perovskite precursor solution at elevated temperatures leads to improved surface coverage and enhanced solar cell performance.
Hydrogen, the smallest and most abundant element in nature, can be efficiently incorporated within a solid and drastically modify its electronic state - it has been known to induce novel magnetoelectric effects in complex perovskites and modulate insulator-to-metal transition in a correlated Mott oxide. Here we demonstrate that hydrogenation resolves an outstanding challenge in chalcogenide classes of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators and magnets - the control of intrinsic bulk conduction that denies access to quantum surface transport. With electrons donated by a reversible binding of H+ ions to Te(Se) chalcogens, carrier densities are easily changed by over 10^20 cm^-3, allowing tuning the Fermi level into the bulk bandgap to enter surface/edge current channels. The hydrogen-tuned topological materials are stable at room temperature and tunable disregarding bulk size, opening a breadth of platforms for harnessing emergent topological states.

Selection effects can bedevil the inference of the properties of a population of astronomical catalogues, unavoidably biasing the observed catalogue. This is particularly true when mapping interstellar extinction in three dimensions: more extinguished stars are fainter and so generally less likely to appear in any magnitude limited catalogue of observations. This paper demonstrates how to account for this selection effect when mapping extinction, so that accurate and unbiased estimates of the true extinction are obtained. We advocate couching the description of the problem explicitly as a Poisson point process, which allows the likelihoods employed to be easily and correctly normalised in such a way that accounts for the selection functions applied to construct the catalogue of observations.
