Ultra sensitive ring laser gyroscopes are regarded as potential detectors of the general relativistic frame-dragging effect due to the rotation of the Earth: the project name is GINGER (Gyroscopes IN GEneral Relativity), a ground-based triaxial array of ring lasers aiming at measuring the Earth rotation rate with an accuracy of 10^-14 rad/s. Such ambitious goal is now within reach as large area ring lasers are very close to the necessary sensitivity and stability. However, demanding constraints on the geometrical stability of the laser optical path inside the ring cavity are required. We show that the geometrical stability of a square cavity strongly increases by implementing a suitable system to measure the mirror distances, and that the geometry stabilization can be achieved by measuring the absolute lengths of the two diagonals and the perimeter of the ring.

Gyroscopes play a crucial role in many and diverse applications associated with navigation, positioning, and inertial sensing [1]. In general, most optical gyroscopes rely on the Sagnac effect -- a relativistically induced phase shift that scales linearly with the rotational velocity [2,3]. In ring laser gyroscopes (RLGs), this shift manifests itself as a resonance splitting in the emission spectrum that can be detected as a beat frequency [4]. The need for ever-more precise RLGs has fueled research activities towards devising new approaches aimed to boost the sensitivity beyond what is dictated by geometrical constraints. In this respect, attempts have been made in the past to use either dispersive or nonlinear effects [5-8]. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an altogether new route based on non-Hermitian singularities or exceptional points in order to enhance the Sagnac scale factor [9-13]. Our results not only can pave the way towards a new generation of ultrasensitive and compact ring laser gyroscopes, but they may also provide practical approaches for developing other classes of integrated sensors.
A model based on Lambs theory of gas lasers is applied to a He-Ne ring laser gyroscope in order to estimate and remove the laser dynamics contribution from the rotation measurements. The intensities of the counter-propagating laser beams exiting one cavity mirror are continuously observed together with a monitor of the laser population inversion. These observables, once properly calibrated with a dedicated procedure, allow us to estimate cold cavity and active medium parameters driving the main part of the nonlinearities of the system. The parameters identification and noise subtraction procedure has been verified by means of a Monte Carlo study of the system, and experimentally tested on the G-Pisa ring laser oriented with the normal to the ring plane almost parallel to the Earth rotation axis. In this configuration the Earth rotation-rate provides the maximum Sagnac effect while the contribution of the orientation error is reduced at minimum. After the subtraction of laser dynamics by a Kalman filter, the relative systematic errors of G-PISA reduce from 50 to 5 part in 10^3 and can be attributed to the residual uncertainties on geometrical scale factor and orientation of the ring.
We present the experimental test of a method for controlling the absolute length of the diagonals of square ring laser gyroscopes. The purpose is to actively stabilize the ring cavity geometry and to enhance the rotation sensor stability in order to reach the requirements for the detection of the relativistic Lense-Thirring effect with a ground-based array of optical gyroscopes. The test apparatus consists of two optical cavities 1.32 m in length, reproducing the features of the ring cavity diagonal resonators of large frame He-Ne ring laser gyroscopes. The proposed measurement technique is based on the use of a single diode laser, injection locked to a frequency stabilized He-Ne/Iodine frequency standard, and a single electro-optic modulator. The laser is modulated with a combination of three frequencies allowing to lock the two cavities to the same resonance frequency and, at the same time, to determine the cavity Free Spectral Range (FSR). We obtain a stable lock of the two cavities to the same optical frequency reference, providing a length stabilization at the level of 1 part in $10^{11}$, and the determination of the two FSRs with a relative precision of 0.2 ppm. This is equivalent to an error of 500 nm on the absolute length difference between the two cavities.
Interferometric gyroscope systems are being developed with the goal of measuring general-relativistic effects including frame-dragging effects. Such devices are also capable of performing searches for Lorentz violation. We summarize efforts that relate gyroscope measurements to coefficients for Lorentz violation in the gravity sector of the Standard-Model Extension.

We have experimentally investigated the soliton interaction in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser and revealed the existence of three types of strong soliton interaction: a global type of soliton interaction caused by the existence of unstable CW components; a local type of soliton interaction mediated through the radiative dispersive waves; and the direct soliton interaction. We found that the appearance of the various soliton operation modes observed in the passively mode locked fiber soliton lasers are the direct consequences of these three types of soliton interaction. The soliton interaction in the laser is further numerically simulated based on a pulse tracing technique. The numerical simulations confirmed the existence of the dispersive wave mediated soliton interaction and the direct soliton interaction. Furthermore, it was shown that the resonant dispersive waves mediated soliton interaction in the laser always has the consequence of causing random irregular relative soliton movement, and the experimentally observed states of bound solitons are caused by the direct soliton interaction. In particular, as the solitons generated in the laser could have a profile with long tails, the direct soliton interaction could extend to a soliton separation that is larger than 5 times of the soliton pulse width.
