Suspended superconducting nanostructures of MoRe $50%/50%$ by weight are fabricated employing commonly used fabrication steps in micro- and nano-meter scale devices followed by wet-etching with Hydro-fluoric acid of a SiO$_2$ sacrificial layer. Suspended superconducting channels as narrow as $50,rm{nm}$ and length $3,rm{mu m}$ have a critical temperature of $approx 6.5,rm{K}$, which can increase by $0.5rm{K}$ upon annealing at $400,^{circ}mathrm{C}$. A detailed study of the dependence of the superconducting critical current and critical temperature upon annealing and in devices with different channel width reveals that desorption of contaminants is responsible for the improved superconducting properties. These findings pave the way for the development of superconducting electromechanical devices using standard fabrication techniques.

Superconducting microwave resonators (SMR) with high quality factors have become an important technology in a wide range of applications. Molybdenum-Rhenium (MoRe) is a disordered superconducting alloy with a noble surface chemistry and a relatively high transition temperature. These properties make it attractive for SMR applications, but characterization of MoRe SMR has not yet been reported. Here, we present the fabrication and characterization of SMR fabricated with a MoRe 60-40 alloy. At low drive powers, we observe internal quality-factors as high as 700,000. Temperature and power dependence of the internal quality-factors suggest the presence of the two level systems from the dielectric substrate dominating the internal loss at low temperatures. We further test the compatibility of these resonators with high temperature processes such as for carbon nanotube CVD growth, and their performance in the magnetic field, an important characterization for hybrid systems.
We show that electroplated Re films in multilayers with noble metals such as Cu, Au, and Pd have an enhanced superconducting critical temperature relative to previous methods of preparing Re. The dc resistance and magnetic susceptibility indicate a critical temperature of approximately 6 K. Magnetic response as a function of field at 1.8 K demonstrates type-II superconductivity, with an upper critical field on the order of 2.5 T. Critical current densities greater than 10^7 A/m^2 were measured above liquid-helium temperature. Low-loss at radio frequency was obtained below the critical temperature for multilayers deposited onto resonators made with Cu traces on commercial circuit boards. These electroplated superconducting films can be integrated into a wide range of standard components for low-temperature electronics.

We study thermoelectric effects in superconducting nanobridges and demonstrate that the magnitude of these effects can be comparable or even larger than that for a macroscopic superconducting circuit. The reason is related to a possibility to have very large gradients of electron temperature within the nanobridge. The corresponding heat conductivity problems are considered. It is shown that the nanoscale devices allow one to get rid of masking effects related to spurious magnetic fields.

This PhD thesis is divided in 6 chapters. In chapter 1 we introduce basic superconducting phenomena. Such as, the BCS theory, the Andreev reflection and the proximity effect, and the charge current transport in superconducting tunnel junctions. In chapter 2 we present the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function formalism used to obtain the results of this thesis, together with clarifying examples corresponding to simple junctions. In chapter 3, the subgap transport properties of a SIF structure are studied. We devote chapter 4 to the study of thermal transport in superconducting nanohybrid structures. In chapter 5, we develop a general theory for the microwave-irradiated high-transmittance superconducting quantum point contact (SQPC), which consists of a thin constriction of superconducting material in which the Andreev states can be observed. The thesis concludes with a summary of the obtained results in chapter 6. The detailed derivation of the quasiclassical equations is presented in the appendix.

A novel method to fabricate large-area superconducting hybrid tunnel junctions with a suspended central normal metal part is presented. The samples are fabricated by combining photo-lithography and chemical etch of a superconductor - insulator - normal metal multilayer. The process involves few fabrication steps, is reliable and produces extremely high-quality tunnel junctions. Under an appropriate voltage bias, a significant electronic cooling is demonstrated.
