We calculate the neutrino production cross-section through the direct URCA process in proto-neutron star matter in the presence of a strong magnetic field. We assume isoentropic conditions and introduce a new equation of state parameter-set in the relativistic mean-field approach that can reproduce neutron stars with $M > 1.96$ M$_odot$ as required by observations. We find that the production process increases the flux of emitted neutrinos along the direction parallel to the magnetic field and decreases the flux in the opposite direction. This means that the neutrino flux asymmetry due to the neutrino absorption and scattering processes in a magnetic field becomes larger by the inclusion of the neutrino production process.
The medium modifications of the open charm mesons ($D$ and $bar D$) are studied in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter in the presence of strong magnetic fields, using a chiral effective model. The mass modifications of these mesons in the effective hadronic model, arise due to their interactions with the protons, neutrons and the scalar mesons (non-strange isoscalar $sigma$, strange isoscalar, $zeta$ and non-strange isovector, $delta$), in the magnetized nuclear matter. In the presence of magnetic field, for the charged baryon, i.e., the proton, the number density as well as the scalar density have contributions due to the summation over the Landau energy levels. For a given value of the baryon density, $rho_B$, and isospin asymmetry, the scalar fields are solved self consistently from their coupled equations of motion. The modifications of the masses of the $D$ and $bar D$ mesons are calculated, from the medium modifications of the scalar fields and the nucleons. The effects of the anomalous magnetic moments of the nucleons on the masses of the open charm mesons are also investigated in the present work. The effects of isospin asymmetry as well as of the anomalous magnetic moments are observed to be prominent at high densities for large values of magnetic fields.
In the first part of this paper, we investigate the possible existence of a structured hadron-quark mixed phase in the cores of neutron stars. This phase, referred to as the hadron-quark pasta phase, consists of spherical blob, rod, and slab rare phase geometries. Particular emphasis is given to modeling the size othis phase in rotating neutron stars. We use the relativistic mean-field theory to model hadronic matter and the non-local three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to describe quark matter. Based on these models, the hadron-quark pasta phase exists only in very massive neutron stars, whose rotational frequencies are less than around 300 Hz. All other stars are not dense enough to trigger quark deconfinement in their cores. Part two of the paper deals with the quark-hadron composition of hot (proto) neutron star matter. To this end we use a local three-flavor Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model which includes the t Hooft (quark flavor mixing) term. It is found that this term leads to non-negligible changes in the particle composition of (proto) neutron stars made of hadron-quark matter.
Neutrino emissivities in a neutron star are computed for the neutrino bremsstrahlung process. In the first part the electro-weak nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung is calculated in free space in terms of a on-shell $T$-matrix using a generalized Low energy theorem. In the second part the emissivities are calculated in terms of the hadronic polarization at the two-loop level. Various medium effects, such as finite particle width, Pauli blocking in the $T$-matrix are considered. Compared to the pioneering work of Friman and Maxwell in terms of (anti-symmetrized) one-pion exchange the resulting emissivity is about a factor 4 smaller at saturation density.
We use covariant density functional theory to obtain the equation of state (EoS) of matter in compact stars at non-zero temperature, including the full baryon octet as well as the $Delta(1232)$ resonance states. Global properties of hot $Delta$-admixed hypernuclear stars are computed for fixed values of entropy per baryon ($S/A$) and lepton fraction ($Y_L$). Universal relations between the moment of inertia, quadrupole moment, tidal deformability, and compactness of compact stars are established for fixed values of $S/A$ and $Y_L$ that are analogous to those known for cold catalyzed compact stars. We also verify that the $I$-Love-$Q$ relations hold at finite temperature for constant values of $S/A$ and $Y_L$.
Motivated by the recent gravitational wave detection by the LIGO-VIRGO observatories, we study the Love number and dimensionless tidal polarizability of highly magnetized stars. We also investigate the fundamental quasi-normal mode of neutron stars subject to high magnetic fields. To perform our calculations we use the chaotic field approximation and consider both nucleonic and hyperonic stars. As far as the fundamental mode is concerned, we conclude that the role played by the constitution of the stars is far more relevant than the intensity of the magnetic field and if massive stars are considered, the ones constituted by nucleons only present frequencies somewhat lower than the ones with hyperonic cores, a feature that can be used to point out the real internal structure of neutron stars. Moreover, our studies clearly indicate that strong magnetic fields play a crucial role in the deformability of low mass neutron stars, with possible consequences on the interpretation of the detected gravitational waves signatures.
