Traditional AI reasoning techniques have been used successfully in many domains, including logistics, scheduling and game playing. This paper is part of a project aimed at investigating how such techniques can be extended to coordinate teams of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in dynamic environments. Specifically challenging are real-world environments where UAVs and other network-enabled devices must communicate to coordinate -- and communication actions are neither reliable nor free. Such network-centric environments are common in military, public safety and commercial applications, yet most research (even multi-agent planning) usually takes communications among distributed agents as a given. We address this challenge by developing an agent architecture and reasoning algorithms based on Answer Set Programming (ASP). Although ASP has been used successfully in a number of applications, to the best of our knowledge this is the first practical application of a complete ASP-based agent architecture. It is also the first practical application of ASP involving a combination of centralized reasoning, decentralized reasoning, execution monitoring, and reasoning about network communications.

It is also the first practical application of ASP involving a combination of centralized reasoning, decentralized reasoning, execution monitoring, and reasoning about network communications. This work has been empirically validated using a distributed network-centric software evaluation testbed and the results provide guidance to designers in how to understand and control intelligent systems that operate in these environments.
This paper studies the collision avoidance problem for autonomous multiple fixedwing UAVs in the complex integrated airspace. By studying and combining the online path planning method, the distributed model predictive control algorithm, and the geometric reactive control approach, a three-layered collision avoidance system integrating conflict detection and resolution procedures is developed for multiple fixed-wing UAVs modeled by unicycle kinematics subject to input constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is evaluated and validated via test results of comparative simulations under both deterministic and probabilistic sensing conditions.
We describe an application of Answer Set Programming to the understanding of narratives about stereotypical activities, demonstrated via question answering. Substantial work in this direction was done by Erik Mueller, who modeled stereotypical activities as scripts. His systems were able to understand a good number of narratives, but could not process texts describing exceptional scenarios. We propose addressing this problem by using a theory of intentions developed by Blount, Gelfond, and Balduccini. We present a methodology in which we substitute scripts by activities (i.e., hierarchical plans associated with goals) and employ the concept of an intentional agent to reason about both normal and exceptional scenarios. We exemplify the application of this methodology by answering questions about a number of restaurant stories. This paper is under consideration for acceptance in TPLP.
We consider a dynamical approach to sequential games. By restricting the convertibility relation over strategy profiles, we obtain a semi-potential (in the sense of Kukushkin), and we show that in finite games the corresponding restriction of better-response dynamics will converge to a Nash equilibrium in quadratic time. Convergence happens on a per-player basis, and even in the presence of players with cyclic preferences, the players with acyclic preferences will stabilize. Thus, we obtain a candidate notion for rationality in the presence of irrational agents. Moreover, the restriction of convertibility can be justified by a conservative updating of beliefs about the other players strategies. For infinite sequential games we can retain convergence to a Nash equilibrium (in some sense), if the preferences are given by continuous payoff functions; or obtain a transfinite convergence if the outcome sets of the game are Delta^0_2 sets.
As autonomous robots increasingly become part of daily life, they will often encounter dynamic environments while only having limited information about their surroundings. Unfortunately, due to the possible presence of malicious dynamic actors, it is infeasible to develop an algorithm that can guarantee collision-free operation. Instead, one can attempt to design a control technique that guarantees the robot is not-at-fault in any collision. In the literature, making such guarantees in real time has been restricted to static environments or specific dynamic models. To ensure not-at-fault behavior, a robot must first correctly sense and predict the world around it within some sufficiently large sensor horizon (the prediction problem), then correctly control relative to the predictions (the control problem). This paper addresses the control problem by proposing Reachability-based Trajectory Design for Dynamic environments (RTD-D), which guarantees that a robot with an arbitrary nonlinear dynamic model correctly responds to predictions in arbitrary dynamic environments. RTD-D first computes a Forward Reachable Set (FRS) offline of the robot tracking parameterized desired trajectories that include fail-safe maneuvers. Then, for online receding-horizon planning, the method provides a way to discretize predictions of an arbitrary dynamic environment to enable real-time collision checking. The FRS is used to map these discretized predictions to trajectories that the robot can track while provably not-at-fault. One such trajectory is chosen at each iteration, or the robot executes the fail-safe maneuver from its previous trajectory which is guaranteed to be not at fault. RTD-D is shown to produce not-at-fault behavior over thousands of simulations and several real-world hardware demonstrations on two robots: a Segway, and a small electric vehicle.
