Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the volume operator, associated with the symmetric coupling of three SU(2) angular momentum operators, can be analyzed on the basis of a discrete Schroedinger-like equation which provides a semiclassical Hamiltonian picture of the evolution of a `quantum of space, as shown by the authors in a recent paper. Emphasis is given here to the formalization in terms of a quadratic symmetry algebra and its automorphism group. This view is related to the Askey scheme, the hierarchical structure which includes all hypergeometric polynomials of one (discrete or continuous) variable. Key tool for this comparative analysis is the duality operation defined on the generators of the quadratic algebra and suitably extended to the various families of overlap functions (generalized recoupling coefficients). These families, recognized as lying at the top level of the Askey scheme, are classified and a few limiting cases are addressed.
We present a mathematical proof of the algorithm allowing to generate all - symmetric and non-symmetric - total angular momentum eigenstates in remote matter qubits by projective measurements, proposed in Maser et al. [Phys. Rev. A 79, 033833 (2009)]. By deriving a recursion formula for the algorithm we show that the generated states are equal to the total angular momentum eigenstates obtained via the usual quantum mechanical coupling of angular momenta. In this way we demonstrate that the algorithm is able to simulate the coupling of N spin-1/2 systems, and to implement the required Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, even though the particles never directly interact with each other.
Fermionic systems differ from their bosonic counterparts, the main difference with regard to symmetry considerations being that $T^2=-1$ for fermionic systems. In PT-symmetric quantum mechanics an operator has both PT and CPT adjoints. Fermionic operators $eta$, which are quadratically nilpotent ($eta^2=0$), and algebras with PT and CPT adjoints can be constructed. These algebras obey different anticommutation relations: $etaeta^{PT}+eta^{PT}eta=-1$, where $eta^{PT}$ is the PT adjoint of $eta$, and $etaeta^{CPT}+eta^{CPT}eta=1$, where $eta^{CPT}$ is the CPT adjoint of $eta$. This paper presents matrix representations for the operator $eta$ and its PT and CPT adjoints in two and four dimensions. A PT-symmetric second-quantized Hamiltonian modeled on quantum electrodynamics that describes a system of interacting fermions and bosons is constructed within this framework and is solved exactly.
This paper analyzes the algebraic and physical properties of the spin and orbital angular momenta of light in the quantum mechanical framework. The consequences of the fact that these are not angular momenta in the quantum mechanical sense are worked out in mathematical detail. It turns out that the spin part of the angular momentum has continuous eigenvalues. Particular attention is given to the paraxial limit, and to the definition of Laguerre--Gaussian modes for photons as well as classical light fields taking full account of the polarization degree of freedom.
In this paper, we examine the relationship between general relativity and the theory of Einstein algebras. We show that according to a formal criterion for theoretical equivalence recently proposed by Halvorson (2012, 2015) and Weatherall (2015), the two are equivalent theories.
We report the experimental preparation of optical superpositions of high orbital angular momenta(OAM). Our method is based on the use of spatial light modulator to modify the standard Laguerre-Gaussian beams to bear excessive phase helices. We demonstrate the surprising performance of a traditional Mach-Zehnder interferometer with one inserted Dove prism to identify these superposed twisted lights, where the high OAM numbers as well as their possible superpositions can be inferred directly from the interfered bright multiring lattices. The possibility of present scheme working at photon-count level is also shown using an electron multiplier CCD camera. Our results hold promise in high-dimensional quantum information applications when high quanta are beneficial.
