Electronic and transport properties of CuGaTe$_2$, a hole-doped ternary copper based chalcopyrite type semiconductor, are studied using calculations within the Density Functional Theory and solving the Boltzmann transport equation within the constant relaxation time approximation. The electronic bandstructures are calculated by means of the full-potential linear augmented plane wave method, using the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential. The calculated band gap of 1.23 eV is in agreement with the experimental value of 1.2 eV. The carrier concentration- and temperature dependent thermoelectric properties of CuGaTe$_2$ are derived, and a figure of merit of $zT= 1.69$ is obtained at 950 K for a hole concentration of $3.7cdot10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$, in agreement with a recent experimental finding of $zT= 1.4$, confirming that CuGaTe$_2$ is a promising material for high temperature thermoelectric applications. The good thermoelectric performance of p-type CuGaTe$_2$ is associated with anisotropic transport from a combination of heavy and light bands. Also for CuSbS$_2$ (chalcostibite) a better performance is obtained for p-type than for n-type doping. The variation of the thermopower as a function of temperature and concentration suggests that CuSbS$_2$ will be a good thermoelectric material at low temperatures, similarly to the isostructural CuBiS$_2$ compound.

The bulk photovoltaic effect generates intrinsic photocurrents in materials without inversion symmetry. Shift current is one of the bulk photovoltaic phenomena related to the Berry phase of the constituting electronic bands: photo-excited carriers coherently shift in real space due to the difference in the Berry connection between the valence and conduction bands. Ferroelectric semiconductors and Weyl semimetals are known to exhibit such nonlinear optical phenomena. Here we consider chalcopyrite semiconductor ZnSnP$_2$ which lacks inversion symmetry and calculate the shift current conductivity. We find that the magnitude of the shift current is comparable to the recently measured values on other ferroelectric semiconductors and an order of magnitude larger than bismuth ferrite. The peak response for both optical and shift current conductivity, which mainly comes from P-3$p$ and Sn-5$p$ orbitals, is several eV above the bandgap.
We present an investigation of the thermoelectric properties of cubic perovskite SrTiO3. The results are derived from a combination of calculated transport functions obtained from Boltzmann transport theory in the constant scattering time approximation based on the electronic structure and existing experimental data for La-doped SrTiO3. The figure of merit ZT is modeled with respect to carrier concentration and temperature. The model predicts a relatively high $ZT$ at optimized doping, and suggests that the $ZT$ value can reach 0.7 at T = 1400 K. Thus $ZT$ can be improved from the current experimental values by carrier concentration optimization.
Two-dimensional (2D) tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$), tungsten diselenide (WSe$_2$), and tungsten ditelluride (WTe$_2$) draw increasing attention due to their attractive properties deriving from the heavy tungsten and chalcogenide atoms, but their mechanical properties are still mostly unknown. Here, we determine the intrinsic and air-aged mechanical properties of mono-, bi-, and trilayer (1-3L) WS$_2$, WSe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ using a complementary suite of experiments and theoretical calculations. High-quality 1L WS$_2$ has the highest Youngs modulus (302.4+-24.1 GPa) and strength (47.0+-8.6 GPa) of the entire family, overpassing those of 1L WSe$_2$ (258.6+-38.3 and 38.0+-6.0 GPa, respectively) and WTe$_2$ (149.1+-9.4 and 6.4+-3.3 GPa, respectively). However, the elasticity and strength of WS$_2$ decrease most dramatically with increased thickness among the three materials. We interpret the phenomenon by the different tendencies for interlayer sliding in equilibrium state and under in-plane strain and out-of-plane compression conditions in the indentation process, revealed by finite element method (FEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations including van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We also demonstrate that the mechanical properties of the high-quality 1-3L WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ are largely stable in the air for up to 20 weeks. Intriguingly, the 1-3L WSe$_2$ shows increased modulus and strength values with aging in the air. This is ascribed to oxygen doping, which reinforces the structure. The present study will facilitate the design and use of 2D tungsten dichalcogenides in applications, such as strain engineering and flexible field-effect transistors (FETs).
We combined the bond order length strength and bond charge models and the topological concept to obtain the nonbonding, bonding, and antibonding states of the T type WTe$_2$/MoS$_2$ heterostructure. The energy band projection method and electronic information entropy are remarkable approaches for analyzing the electronic properties of various structures based on DFT calculations. This study provides a new way to describe the electronic properties of T type heterostructures and calculate the electron and bonding state probabilities.
Based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, a Dirac nodal-net semimetal state is recognized in AlB$_2$-type TiB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$ when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. Taking TiB$_2$ as an example, there are several topological excitations in this nodal-net structure including triple point, nexus, and nodal link, which are protected by coexistence of spatial-inversion symmetry and time reversal symmetry. This nodal-net state is remarkably different from that of IrF$_4$, which requires sublattice chiral symmetry. In addition, linearly and quadratically dispersed two-dimensional surface Dirac points are identified as having emerged on the B-terminated and Ti-terminated (001) surfaces of TiB$_2$ respectively, which are analogous to those of monolayer and bilayer graphene.
