The characterization and manipulation of deposited magnetic clusters or molecules on surfaces is a prerequisite for their future utilization. In recent years techniques like spin-flip inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy using a scanning tunneling microscope proved to be very precise in determining e.g. exchange constants in deposited finite spin chains in the meV range. In this article we tackle the problem numerically by investigating the transition from where a pure spin Hamiltonian is sufficient to the point where the interaction with the surface significantly alters the magnetic properties. To this end we study the static, i.e. equilibrium impurity magnetization of antiferromagnetic chains for varying couplings to a conduction electron band of a metal substrate. We show under which circumstances the screening of a part of the system enables one to deduce molecular parameters of the remainder from level crossings in an applied field.

We investigate the ground state magnetization plateaus appearing in spin 1/2 polymerized Heisenberg chains under external magnetic fields. The associated fractional quantization scenario and the exponents which characterize the opening of gapful excitations are analyzed by means of abelian bosonization methods. Our conclusions are fully supported by the extrapolated results obtained from Lanczos diagonalizations of finite systems.
A symmetry-protected topologically ordered phase is a short-range entangled state, for which some imposed symmetry prohibits the adiabatic deformation into a trivial state which lacks entanglement. In this paper we argue that magnetization plateau states of one-dimensional antiferromagnets which satisfy the conditions $S-min$ odd integer, where $S$ is the spin quantum number and $m$ the magnetization per site, can be identified as symmetry-protected topological states if an inversion symmetry about the link center is present. This assertion is reached by mapping the antiferromagnet into a nonlinear sigma model type effective field theory containing a novel Berry phase term (a total derivative term) with a coefficient proportional to the quantity $S-m$, and then analyzing the topological structure of the ground state wave functional which is inherited from the latter term. A boson-vortex duality transformation is employed to examine the topological stability of the ground state in the absence/presence of a perturbation violating link-center inversion symmetry. Our prediction based on field theories is verified by means of a numerical study of the entanglement spectra of actual spin chains, which we find to exhibit twofold degeneracies when the aforementioned condition is met. We complete this study with a rigorous analysis using matrix product states.
We study themagnetism of a spin-1 substance Li2Ni2Mo3O12. The spin system consists of distorted honeycomb lattices and linear chains of Ni2+ spins. Li+ ions enter about 25% and 50% of the honeycomb and chain Ni sites, respectively, creating disorder in both spin subsystems. A magnetic phase transition occurs at Tc = 8.0 K in the zero magnetic field. In low magnetic fields, the magnetization increases rapidly below Tc, decreases below 7 K, and finally becomes negative at low temperatures. We determine the magnetic structure using neutron powder diffraction results. The honeycomb lattices and linear chains show antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range order, respectively. We investigate static and dynamic magnetic properties using the local probe technique of muon spin relaxation. We discuss the origin of the negative magnetization.
The antiferromagnetic spin-one chain is considerably one of the most fundamental quantum many-body systems, with symmetry protected topological order in the ground state. Here, we present results for its dynamical spin structure factor at finite temperatures, based on a combination of exact numerical diagonalization, matrix-product-state calculations and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Open finite chains exhibit a sub-gap band in the thermal spectral functions, indicative of localized edge-states. Moreover, we observe the thermal activation of a distinct low-energy continuum contribution to the spin spectral function with an enhanced spectral weight at low momenta and its upper threshold. This emerging thermal spectral feature of the Haldane spin-one chain is shown to result from intra-band magnon scattering due to the thermal population of the single-magnon branch, which features a large bandwidth-to-gap ratio. These findings are discussed with respect to possible future studies on spin-one chain compounds based on inelastic neutron scattering.
We describe a coupled-chain construction for chiral spin liquids in two-dimensional spin systems. Starting from a one-dimensional zigzag spin chain and imposing SU(2) symmetry in the framework of non-Abelian bosonization, we first show that our approach faithfully describes the low-energy physics of an exactly solvable model with a three-spin interaction. Generalizing the construction to the two-dimensional case, we obtain a theory that incorporates the universal properties of the chiral spin liquid predicted by Kalmeyer and Laughlin: charge-neutral edge states, gapped spin-1/2 bulk excitations, and ground state degeneracy on the torus signalling the topological order of this quantum state. In addition, we show that the chiral spin liquid phase is more easily stabilized in frustrated lattices containing corner-sharing triangles, such as the extended kagome lattice, than in the triangular lattice. Our field theoretical approach invites generalizations to more exotic chiral spin liquids and may be used to assess the existence of the chiral spin liquid as the ground state of specific lattice systems.
