We advocate a Bayesian approach to optimal quantum frequency estimation - an important issue for future quantum enhanced atomic clock operation. The approach provides a clear insight into the interplay between decoherence and the extent of the prior knowledge in determining the optimal interrogation times and optimal estimation strategies. We propose a general framework capable of describing local oscillator noise as well as additional collective atomic dephasing effects. For a Gaussian noise the average Bayesian cost can be expressed using the quantum Fisher information and thus we establish a direct link between the two, often competing, approaches to quantum estimation theory
We discuss the problem of estimating a frequency via N-qubit probes undergoing independent dephasing channels that can be continuously monitored via homodyne or photo-detection. We derive the corresponding analytical solutions for the conditional states, for generic initial states and for arbitrary efficiency of the continuous monitoring. For the detection strategies considered, we show that: i) in the case of perfect continuous detection, the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of the conditional states is equal to the one obtained in the noiseless dynamics; ii) for smaller detection efficiencies, the QFI of the conditional state is equal to the QFI of a state undergoing the (unconditional) dephasing dynamics, but with an effectively reduced noise parameter.
Including collisional decoherence explicitly, phase sensitivity for estimating effective scattering strength $chi$ of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is derived analytically. With a measurement of spin operator $hat{J}_{x}$, we find that the optimal sensitivity depends on initial coherent spin state. It degrades by a factor of $(2gamma)^{1/3}$ below super-Heisenberg limit $propto 1/N^{3/2}$ for particle number $N$ and the dephasing rate $1<!<gamma<N^{3/4}$. With a $hat{J}_y$ measurement, our analytical results confirm that the phase $phi=chi tsim 0$ can be detected at the limit even in the presence of the dephasing.
The goal of quantum metrology is the precise estimation of parameters using quantum properties such as entanglement. This estimation usually consists of three steps: state preparation, time evolution during which information of the parameters is encoded in the state, and readout of the state. Decoherence during the time evolution typically degrades the performance of quantum metrology and is considered to be one of the major obstacles to realizing entanglement-enhanced sensing. We show, however, that under suitable conditions, this decoherence can be exploited to improve the sensitivity. Assume that we have two axes, and our aim is to estimate the relative angle between them. Our results reveal that the use of Markvoian collective dephasing to estimate the relative angle between the two directions affords Heisenberg-limited sensitivity. Moreover, our scheme based on Markvoian collective dephasing is robust against environmental noise, and it is possible to achieve the Heisenberg limit even under the effect of independent dephasing. Our counterintuitive results showing that the sensitivity is improved by using the decoherence pave the way to novel applications in quantum metrology.
Simultaneous quantum estimation of multiple parameters has recently become essential in quantum metrology. Although the ultimate sensitivity of a multiparameter quantum estimation in noiseless environments can beat the standard quantum limit that every classical sensor is bounded by, it is unclear whether the quantum sensor has an advantage over the classical one under realistic noise. In this work, we present a framework of the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters with quantum sensors in a certain noisy environment. Our multiple parameters to be estimated are three components of an external magnetic field, and we consider the noise that causes only dephasing. We show that there is an optimal sensing time in the noisy environment and the sensitivity can beat the standard quantum limit when the noisy environment is non-Markovian.
Most studies of collective dephasing for bipartite as well as multipartite quantum systems focus on a very specific orientation of magnetic field, that is, z-orientation. However, in practical situations, there are always small fluctuations in stochastic field and it is necessary that more general orientations of fields should be considered. We extend this problem to qubit-qutrit systems and study correlation dynamics for entanglement and local quantum uncertainty for some specific quantum states. We find that certain quantum states exhibit freezing dynamics both for entanglement and local quantum uncertainty. We analyze the asymptotic states and find the conditions for having non-zero entanglement and local quantum uncertainty. Our results are relevant for ion-trap experiments and can be verified with current experimental setups.
