Westerlund 1 (Wd 1) is the most massive stellar cluster in the Galaxy and associated with an extended region of TeV emission. Here we report the results of a search for GeV gamma-ray emission in this region. The analysis is based on ~4.5 years of Fermi-LAT data and reveals significantly extended emission which we model as a Gaussian, resulting in a best-fit sigma of sigma_S = (0.475 +/- 0.05) deg and an offset from Wd 1 of ~1 deg. A partial overlap of the GeV emission with the TeV signal as reported by H.E.S.S. is found. We investigate the spectral and morphological characteristics of the gamma-ray emission and discuss its origin in the context of two distinct scenarios. Acceleration of electrons in a Pulsar Wind Nebula provides a reasonably natural interpretation of the GeV emission, but leaves the TeV emission unexplained. A scenario in which protons are accelerated in or near Wd 1 in supernova explosion(s) and are diffusing away and interacting with molecular material, seems consistent with the observed GeV and TeV emission, but requires a very high energy input in protons, ~10^51 erg, and rather slow diffusion. Observations of Wd 1 with a future gamma-ray detector such as CTA provide a very promising route to fully resolve the origin of the TeV and GeV emission in Wd 1 and provide a deeper understanding of the high-energy (HE) astrophysics of massive stellar clusters.

Results obtained in very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray observations performed with the H.E.S.S. telescope array are used to investigate particle acceleration processes in the vicinity of the young massive stellar cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd 1). Imaging of Cherenkov light from gamma-ray induced particle cascades in the Earths atmosphere is used to search for VHE gamma rays from the region around Wd 1. Possible catalogued counterparts are searched for and discussed in terms of morphology and energetics of the H.E.S.S. source. The detection of the degree-scale extended VHE gamma-ray source HESS J1646-458 is reported based on 45 hours of H.E.S.S. observations performed between 2004 and 2008. The VHE gamma-ray source is centred on the nominal position of Wd 1 and detected with a total statistical significance of ~20sigma. The emission region clearly extends beyond the H.E.S.S. point-spread function (PSF). The differential energy spectrum follows a power law in energy with an index of Gamma=2.19 pm 0.08_{stat} pm 0.20_{sys} and a flux normalisation at 1 TeV of Phi_0 = (9.0 pm 1.4_{stat} pm 1.8_{sys}) x 10^{-12} TeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The integral flux above 0.2 TeV amounts to (5.2 pm 0.9) x 10^{-11} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. Four objects coincident with HESS J1646-458 are discussed in the search of a counterpart, namely the magnetar CXOU J164710.2-455216, the X-ray binary 4U 1642-45, the pulsar PSR J1648-4611 and the massive stellar cluster Wd 1. In a single-source scenario, Wd 1 is favoured as site of VHE particle acceleration. Here, a hadronic parent population would be accelerated within the stellar cluster. Beside this, there is evidence for a multi-source origin, where a scenario involving PSR J1648-4611 could be viable to explain parts of the VHE gamma-ray emission of HESS J1646-458.

We present the results of extensive observations by the gamma-ray AGILE satellite of the Galactic region hosting the Carina nebula and the remarkable colliding wind binary Eta Carinae (Eta Car) during the period 2007 July to 2009 January. We detect a gamma-ray source (1AGL J1043-5931) consistent with the position of Eta Car. If 1AGL J1043-5931 is associated with the Eta Car system our data provide the long sought first detection above 100 MeV of a colliding wind binary. The average gamma-ray flux above 100 MeV and integrated over the pre-periastron period 2007 July to 2008 October is F = (37 +/- 5) x 10-8 ph cm-2 s-1 corresponding to an average gamma-ray luminosity of L = 3.4 x 10^34 erg s-1 for a distance of 2.3 kpc. We also report a 2-day gamma-ray flaring episode of 1AGL J1043-5931 on 2008 Oct. 11-13 possibly related to a transient acceleration and radiation episode of the strongly variable shock in the system.
In May - July 2014, the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 454.3 exhibited strong flaring behaviour. Observations with the Large Area Telescope detector on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope captured the $gamma$-ray flux at energies 0.1 $leq E_{gamma}leq$ 300 GeV increasing fivefold during this period, with two distinct peaks in emission. The $gamma$-ray emission is analysed in detail, in order to study the emission characteristics and put constraints on the location of the emission region. We explore variability in the spectral shape of 3C 454.3, search for evidence of a spectral cutoff, quantify the significance of VHE emission and investigate whether or not an energy-dependence of the emitting electron cooling exists. $gamma$-ray intrinsic doubling timescales as small as $tau_{int} = 0.68$ $pm$ 0.01 h at a significance of > 5$sigma$ are found, providing evidence of a compact emission region. Significant $E_{gamma, emitted}geq$ 35 GeV and $E_{gamma, emitted}geq$ 50 GeV emission is also observed. The location of the emission region can be constrained to $rgeq1.3$ $times$ $R_{BLR}^{out}$, a location outside the broad-line region. The spectral variation of 3C 454.3 also suggests that these flares may be originating further downstream of the supermassive black hole than the emission before and after the flares.

Hadronic gamma-ray emission from supernova remnants (SNRs) is an important tool to test shock acceleration of cosmic ray protons. Tycho is one of nearly a dozen Galactic SNRs which are suggested to emit hadronic gamma-ray emission. Among them, however, it is the only one in which the hadronic emission is proposed to arise from the interaction with low-density (~0.3 cm^{-3}) ambient medium. Here we present an alternative hadronic explanation with a modest conversion efficiency (of order 1%) for this young remnant. With such an efficiency, a normal electron-proton ratio (of order 10^{-2}) is derived from the radio and X-ray synchrotron spectra and an average ambient density that is at least one-order-of-magnitude higher is derived from the hadronic gamma-ray flux. This result is consistent with the multi-band evidence of the presence of dense medium from the north to the east of the Tycho SNR. The SNR-cloud association, in combination with the HI absorption data, helps to constrain the so-far controversial distance to Tycho and leads to an estimate of 2.5 kpc.
Star-forming regions have been proposed as potential Galactic cosmic-ray accelerators for decades. Cosmic-ray acceleration can be probed through observations of gamma-rays produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions, at GeV and TeV energies. In this paper, we analyze more than 11 years of Fermi-LAT data from the direction of Westerlund 2, one of the most massive and best-studied star-forming regions in our Galaxy. In particular, we investigate the characteristics of the bright pulsar PSR J1023-5746 that dominates the gamma-ray emission below a few GeV at the position of Westerlund 2, and the underlying extended source FGES J1023.3-5747. The analysis results in a clear identification of FGES J1023.3-5747 as the GeV counterpart of the TeV source HESS J1023-575, through its morphological and spectral properties. This identification provides new clues about the origin of the HESS J1023-575 gamma-ray emission, favouring a hadronic origin of the emission, powered by Westerlund 2, rather than a leptonic origin related to either the pulsar wind nebula associated with PSR J1023-5746 or the cluster itself. This result indirectly supports the hypothesis that star-forming regions can contribute to the cosmic-ray sea observed in our Galaxy
