Gamma-ray binaries allow us to study physical processes such as particle acceleration up to very-high energies and gamma-ray emission and absorption with changing geometrical configurations on a periodic basis. These sources produce outflows of radio-emitting particles whose structure can be imaged with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). We have studied the changing morphology of the gamma-ray binaries LS I +61 303 and LS 5039, and we have discovered the extended emission of PSR B1259-63 and HESS J0632+057. Based on these results, we have established the basic properties and behaviour of the radio emission of gamma-ray binaries on AU scales, and we have contributed to find characteristics that are common to all of them. Here we present the most relevant properties of each source and the general properties of gamma-ray binaries, and we describe the implications on the nature of these binary systems.

The discovery of periodicity in the arrival times of the fast radio bursts (FRBs) poses a challenge to the oft-studied magnetar scenarios. However, models that postulate that FRBs result from magnetized shocks or magnetic reconnection in a relativistic outflow are not specific to magnetar engines; instead, they require only the impulsive injection of relativistic energy into a dense magnetized medium. Motivated thus, we outline a new scenario in which FRBs are powered by short-lived relativistic outflows (``flares) from accreting black holes or neutron stars, which propagate into the cavity of the pre-existing (``quiescent) jet. In order to reproduce FRB luminosities and rates, we are driven to consider binaries of stellar-mass compact objects undergoing super-Eddington mass-transfer, similar to ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources. Indeed, the host galaxies of FRBs, and their spatial offsets within their hosts, show broad similarities with ULXs. Periodicity on timescales of days to years could be attributed to precession (e.g., Lens-Thirring) of the polar accretion funnel, along which the FRB emission is geometrically and relativistically beamed, which sweeps across the observer line of sight. Accounting for the most luminous FRBs via accretion power may require a population of binaries undergoing brief-lived phases of unstable (dynamical-timescale) mass-transfer. This will lead to secular evolution in the properties of some repeating FRBs on timescales of months to years, followed by a transient optical/IR counterpart akin to a luminous red nova, or a more luminous accretion-powered optical/X-ray transient. We encourage targeted FRB searches of known ULX sources.

High-mass gamma-ray binaries consist of a presumptive pulsar in orbit with a massive star. The intense outflows from the star can absorb radio emission from the pulsar, making the detection of pulsation difficult. In this work, we present the basic geometry and formulae that describe the absorption process of a pulsar in binary with an O/B star and apply our model to two typical and well-studied binaries: PSR~B1259-63/LS~2883 and LS 5039. We investigate the influences of the equatorial disc of LS 2883 with different orientations on the dispersion measure and free-free absorption of the radio pulsation from PSR B1259-63. The observed data are consistent with the disc inserted on the orbital plane with a relatively large inclination angle. For LS 5039, due to its tight orbit, it was believed that the strong wind absorption makes detecting radio emissions from the putative pulsar unlikely. However, considering the wind interaction and orbital motion, a bow shock cavity and a Coriolis shock would be formed, thereby allowing the pulsations to partially avoid stellar outflow absorption. We investigate the dependence of the radio optical depth on the observing frequencies, the orbital inclination angle, and the wind parameters. We suppose that the presumptive pulsar in LS 5039 is similar to PSR B1259-63 with pulsed emission extending to several tens of gigahertz. In that case, there could be a transparent window for radio pulsations when the pulsar is moving around the inferior conjunction. The following deep monitoring of LS 5039 and other systems by radio telescopes at high radio frequencies might reveal the nature of compact objects in the future. Alternatively, even a null detection could still provide further constraints on the properties of the putative pulsar and stellar outflows.
Gamma-ray binaries are a subclass of high-mass binary systems whose energy spectrum peaks at high energies (E$gtrsim$100 MeV) and extends to very high energies (E$gtrsim$100 GeV) $gamma$ rays. In this review we summarize properties of well-studied non-transient $gamma$-ray binaries as well as briefly discuss poorly known systems and transient systems hosting a microquasar. We discuss also theoretical models that have been used to describe spectral and timing characteristics of considered systems

Recent ground based and space telescopes that detect high energy photons from a few up to hundreds of gigaelectron volts (GeV) have opened a new window on the universe. However, because of the relatively poor angular resolution of these telescopes, a large fraction of the thousands of sources of gamma-rays observed remains unknown. Compact astrophysical objects are among those high energy sources, and in the Milky Way there is a particular class called Gamma-Ray Binaries.
We review the multiwavelength properties of the few known gamma-ray binaries, focusing on extended emission recently resolved with Chandra. We discuss the implications of these findings for the nature of compact objects and for physical processes operating in these systems.
