We introduce a type of quantum dissipation -- local quantum friction -- by adding to the Hamiltonian a local potential that breaks time-reversal invariance so as to cool the system. Unlike the Kossakowski-Lindblad master equation, local quantum friction directly effects unitary evolution of the wavefunctions rather than the density matrix: it may thus be used to cool fermionic many-body systems with thousands of wavefunctions that must remain orthogonal. In addition to providing an efficient way to simulate quantum dissipation and non-equilibrium dynamics, local quantum friction coupled with adiabatic state preparation significantly speeds up many-body simulations, making the solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation significantly simpler than the solution of its stationary counterpart.

The Floquet Hamiltonian has often been used to describe a time-periodic system. Nevertheless, because the Floquet Hamiltonian depends on a micro-motion parameter, the Floquet Hamiltonian with a fixed micro-motion parameter cannot faithfully represent a driven system, which manifests as the anomalous edge states. Here we show that an accurate description of a Floquet system requires a set of Hamiltonian exhausting all values of the micro-motion parameter, and this micro-motion parameter can be viewed as an extra synthetic dimension of the system. Therefore, we show that a $d$-dimensional Floquet system can be described by a $d+1$-dimensional static Hamiltonian, and the advantage of this representation is that the periodic boundary condition is automatically imposed along the extra-dimension, which enables a straightforward definition of topological invariants. The topological invariant in the $d+1$-dimensional system can ensure a $d-1$-dimensional edge state of the $d$-dimensional Floquet system. Here we show two examples where the topological invariant is a three-dimensional Hopf invariant. We highlight that our scheme of classifying Floquet topology on the micro-motion space is different from the previous classification of Floquet topology on the time space.
We propose a quantum information based scheme to reduce the temperature of quantum many-body systems, and access regimes beyond the current capability of conventional cooling techniques. We show that collective measurements on multiple copies of a system at finite temperature can simulate measurements of the same system at a lower temperature. This idea is illustrated for the example of ultracold atoms in optical lattices, where controlled tunnel coupling and quantum gas microscopy can be naturally combined to realize the required collective measurements to access a lower, virtual temperature. Our protocol is experimentally implemented for a Bose-Hubbard model on up to 12 sites, and we successfully extract expectation values of observables at half the temperature of the physical system. Additionally, we present related techniques that enable the extraction of zero-temperature states directly.
An ab-initio method for determining the dynamical structure function of an interacting many--body quantum system has been devised by combining a generalized integral transform method with Quantum Monte Carlo methods. As a first application, the coherent and, separately, the incoherent excitation spectrum of bulk atomic 4He has been computed, both in the low and intermediate momentum range. The peculiar form of the kernel in the integral transform of the dynamical structure function allows to predict, without using any model, both position and width of the collective excitations in the maxon--roton region, as well as the second collective peak. A prediction of the dispersion of the single--particle modes described by the incoherent part is also presented.

Using the phenomenological quantum friction models introduced by Caldirola-Kanai, Kostin, and Albrecht, we study quantum tunneling of a one-dimensional potential in the presence of energy dissipation. To this end, we calculate the tunneling probability using a time-dependent wave packet method. The friction reduces the tunneling probability. We show that the three models provide similar penetrabilities to each other, among which the Caldirola-Kanai model requires the least numerical effort. We also discuss the effect of energy dissipation on quantum tunneling in terms of barrier distributions.

Recent experiments began to explore the topological properties of quench dynamics, i.e. the time evolution following a sudden change in the Hamiltonian, via tomography of quantum gases in optical lattices. In contrast to the well established theory for static band insulators or periodically driven systems, at present it is not clear whether, and how, topological invariants can be defined for a general quench of band insulators. Previous work solved a special case of this problem beautifully using Hopf mapping of two-band Hamiltonians in two dimensions. But it only works for topologically trivial initial state and is hard to generalize to multiband systems or other dimensions. Here we introduce the concept of loop unitary constructed from the unitary time-evolution operator, and show its homotopy invariant fully characterizes the dynamical topology. For two-band systems in two dimensions, we prove that the invariant is precisely equal to the change in the Chern number across the quench regardless of the initial state. We further show that the nontrivial dynamical topology manifests as hedgehog defects in the loop unitary, and also as winding and linking of its eigenvectors along a curve where dynamical quantum phase transition occurs. This opens up a systematic route to classify and characterize quantum quench dynamics.
