In wireless communication systems, the nonlinear effect and inefficiency of power amplifier (PA) have posed practical challenges for system designs to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). In this paper, we analyze the impact of PA on the SE-EE tradeoff of orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems. An ideal PA that is always linear and incurs no additional power consumption can be shown to yield a decreasing convex function in the SE-EE tradeoff. In contrast, we show that a practical PA has an SE-EE tradeoff that has a turning point and decreases sharply after its maximum EE point. In other words, the Pareto-optimal tradeoff boundary of the SE-EE curve is very narrow. A wide range of SE-EE tradeoff, however, is desired for future wireless communications that have dynamic demand depending on the traffic loads, channel conditions, and system applications, e.g., high-SE-with-low-EE for rate-limited systems and high-EE-with-low-SE for energy-limited systems. For the SE-EE tradeoff improvement, we propose a PA switching (PAS) technique. In a PAS transmitter, one or more PAs are switched on intermittently to maximize the EE and deliver an overall required SE. As a consequence, a high EE over a wide range SE can be achieved, which is verified by numerical evaluations: with 15% SE reduction for low SE demand, the PAS between a low power PA and a high power PA can improve EE by 323%, while a single high power PA transmitter improves EE by only 68%.

In this paper, we study the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) for visible light communication (VLC). Firstly, we derive the achiev-able rates for Gaussian distributions inputs and practical finite-alphabet inputs. Then, we investigate the SE maximization problems subject to both the total transmit power constraint and the average optical power constraint with the above two inputs, respectively. By exploiting the relationship between the mutual information and the minimum mean-squared error, an optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the SE with finite-alphabet inputs. To reduce the computational complexity of the power allocation scheme, we derive a closed-form lower bound of the SE. Also, considering the quality of service, we further tackle the non-convex EE maximization problems of ACO-OFDM with the two inputs, respectively. The problems are solved by the proposed Dinkelbach-type iterative algorithm. In each iteration, the interior point algorithm is applied to obtain the optimal power allocation. The performance of the proposed power allocation schemes for the SE and EE maximization are validated through numerical analysis.
The emergence of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) enables us to establish programmable radio wave propagation that caters for wireless communications, via employing low-cost passive reflecting units. This work studies the non-trivial tradeoff between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink communications aided by a RIS equipped with discrete phase shifters. For reducing the required signaling overhead and energy consumption, our transmission strategy design is based on the partial channel state information (CSI), including the statistical CSI between the RIS and user terminals (UTs) and the instantaneous CSI between the RIS and the base station. To investigate the EE-SE tradeoff, we develop a framework for the joint optimization of UTs transmit precoding and RIS reflective beamforming to maximize a performance metric called resource efficiency (RE). For the design of UTs precoding, it is simplified into the design of UTs transmit powers with the aid of the closed-form solutions of UTs optimal transmit directions. To avoid the high complexity in computing the nested integrals involved in the expectations, we derive an asymptotic deterministic objective expression. For the design of the RIS phases, an iterative mean-square error minimization approach is proposed via capitalizing on the homotopy, accelerated projected gradient, and majorization-minimization methods. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness and rapid convergence rate of our proposed optimization framework.
Cell biasing and downlink transmit power are two controls that may be used to improve the spectral efficiency of cellular networks. With cell biasing, each mobile user associates with the base station offering, say, the highest biased signal to interference plus noise ratio. Biasing affects the cell association decisions of mobile users, but not the received instantaneous downlink transmission rates. Adjusting the collection of downlink transmission powers can likewise affect the cell associations, but in contrast with biasing, it also directly affects the instantaneous rates. This paper investigates the joint use of both cell biasing and transmission power control and their (individual and joint) effects on the statistical properties of the collection of per-user spectral efficiencies. Our analytical results and numerical investigations demonstrate in some cases a significant performance improvement in the Pareto efficient frontiers of both a mean-variance and throughput-fairness tradeoff from using both bias and power controls over using either control alone.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (Massive MIMO) has been realized as a promising technology for next generation wireless mobile communications, in which Spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) are two critical issues. Prior estimates have indicated that 57% energy of the cellular system need to be supplied by the operator, especially to feed the base station (BS). While varies scheduling studies concerned on the user equipment (UE) to reduce the total energy consumption instead of BS. Fewer literatures address EE issues from a BS perspective. In this paper, an EE scheme is proposed by reducing the energy consumption of BS. The transmission model and parameters related to EE is formulated first. Afterwards, an cellular partition zooming (CPZ) scheme is proposed where the BS can zoom in to maintain the coverage area. Specifically, if no user exists in the rare area of the coverage, BS will zoom out to sleep mode to save energy. Comprehensive simulation results demonstrate that CPZ has better EE performance with negligible impact on transmission rate.
To increase the spectral efficiency of wireless networks without requiring full-duplex capability of user devices, a potential solution is the recently proposed three-node full-duplex mode. To realize this potential, networks employing three-node full-duplex transmissions must deal with self-interference and user-to-user interference, which can be managed by frequency channel and power allocation techniques. Whereas previous works investigated either spectral efficient or fair mechanisms, a scheme that balances these two metrics among users is investigated in this paper. This balancing scheme is based on a new solution method of the multi-objective optimization problem to maximize the weighted sum of the per-user spectral efficiency and the minimum spectral efficiency among users. The mixed integer non-linear nature of this problem is dealt by Lagrangian duality. Based on the proposed solution approach, a low-complexity centralized algorithm is developed, which relies on large scale fading measurements that can be advantageously implemented at the base station. Numerical results indicate that the proposed algorithm increases the spectral efficiency and fairness among users without the need of weighting the spectral efficiency. An important conclusion is that managing user-to-user interference by resource assignment and power control is crucial for ensuring spectral efficient and fair operation of full-duplex networks.
