We construct a simple model of the Double Drell--Yan Process (DDYP) for proton--proton collisions and investigate its possible contribution to the background for the Higgs-boson searches at the LHC. We demonstrate that under the assumption of the predominance of short range, ${cal O}(0.1),$fm, transverse-plane correlations of quark--antiquark pairs within the proton this contribution becomes important and may even explain the observed excess of the four-lepton events at the LHC -- the events interpreted as originating from the Higgs-boson decays: $ H rightarrow ZZ^{*} rightarrow 4l$ and $ H rightarrow WW^{*} rightarrow 2l 2 u$.

Heavy neutral Higgs boson production and decay into neutralino and chargino pairs is studied at the Large Hadron Collider in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Higgs boson decays into the heavier neutralino and chargino states, i.e., H^0 or A^0 to tilde{chi}_i^0 tilde{chi}_j^0 (i,j = 2,3,4) as well as H^0 or A^0 to tilde{chi}_1^{pm} tilde{chi}_2^{mp}, tilde{chi}_2^+ tilde{chi}_2^- (all leading to four-lepton plus missing transverse energy final states), is found to improve the possibilities of discovering such Higgs states beyond those previously identified by considering H^0 or A^0 to tilde{chi}_2^0 tilde{chi}_2^0 decays only. In particular, H^0,A^0 bosons with quite heavy masses, approaching ~800 GeV in the so-called `decoupling region where no clear SM signatures for the heavier MSSM Higgs bosons are known to exist, can now be discerned, for suitable but not particularly restrictive configurations of the low energy supersymmetric parameters. The high M_A discovery reach for the H^0 and A^0 may thus be greatly extended. Full event-generator level simulations, including realistic detector effects and analyses of all significant backgrounds, are performed to delineate the potential H^0,A^0 discovery regions. The wedgebox plot technique is also utilized to further analyze the 4l plus missing transverse energy signal and background events. This study marks the first thorough and reasonably complete analysis of this important class of MSSM Higgs boson signature modes. In fact, this is the first time discovery regions including all possible neutralino and chargino decay modes of the Higgs bosons have ever been mapped out.
We analyze the Drell-Yan lepton pair production at forward rapidity at the Large Hadron Collider. Using the dipole framework for the computation of the cross section we find a significant suppression in comparison to the collinear factorization formula due to saturation effects in the dipole cross section. We develop a twist expansion in powers of Q_s^2/M^2 where Q_s is the saturation scale and M the invariant mass of the produced lepton pair. For the nominal LHC energy the leading twist description is sufficient down to masses of 6 GeV. Below that value the higher twist terms give a significant contribution.
Generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs) are the most general parton correlation functions of hadrons. By considering the exclusive double Drell-Yan process it is shown for the first time how quark GTMDs can be measured. Specific GTMDs can be addressed by means of polarization observables.
Spectral features in LHC dileptonic events may signal radiative corrections coming from new degrees of freedom, notably dark matter and mediators. Using simplified models, we show how these features can reveal the fundamental properties of the dark sector, such as self-conjugation, spin and mass of dark matter, and the quantum numbers of the mediator. Distributions of both the invariant mass $m_{ell ell}$ and the Collins-Soper scattering angle $costheta_{CS}$ are studied to pinpoint these properties. We derive constraints on the models from LHC measurements of $m_{ell ell}$ and $costheta_{CS}$, which are competitive with direct detection and jets + Missing Energy searches. We find that in certain scenarios the $costheta_{CS}$ spectrum provides the strongest bounds, underlying the importance of scattering angle measurements for non-resonant new physics.

The complete knowledge of the nucleon spin structure at leading twist requires also addressing the transverse spin distribution of quarks, or transversity, which is yet unexplored because of its chiral-odd nature. Transversity can be best extracted from single-spin asymmetries in fully polarized Drell-Yan processes with antiprotons, where valence contributions are involved anyway. Alternatively, in single-polarized Drell-Yan the transversity happens convoluted with another chiral-odd function, which is likely to be responsible for the well known (and yet unexplained) violation of the Lam-Tung sum rule in the corresponding unpolarized cross section. We present Monte-Carlo simulations for the unpolarized and single-polarized Drell-Yan $bar{p} p^{(uparrow)} to mu^+ mu^- X$ at different center-of-mass energies in both configurations where the antiproton beam hits a fixed proton target or it collides on another proton beam. The goal is to estimate the minimum number of events needed to extract the above chiral-odd distributions from future measurements at the HESR ring at GSI. It is important to study the feasibility of such experiments at HESR in order to demonstrate that interesting spin physics can be explored already using unpolarized antiprotons.
