The effect of the octahedral tilting of ASnO3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compound and bi-color ASnO3/BSnO3 superlattice (A, B = Ca, Sr, Ba) was predicted from density-functional theory. In the ASnO3 parent compound, the structural phase transition as a function of the A-site cation size was correlated with the magnitude of the two octahedral tilting modes (a-a-c0 tilting and a0a0c+ tilting). The magnitude of the octahedral tilting modes in the superlattices was analyzed quantitatively and found to be associated with that of the constituent parent materials. The ASnO3/BSnO3 superlattices showed hybrid improper ferroelectricity resulting from the coupling of two octahedral tilting modes (a-a-c0 tilting and a0a0c+ tilting), which are also responsible for the structural phase transition from a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase. The ferroelectricity due to A-site mirror symmetry breaking is a secondary order parameter for an orthorhombic phase transition in the bi-color superlattice and is related to the {Gamma}5- symmetry mode. The coupling between the tilting modes and ferroelectric mode in the bi-color superlattice of ASnO3/BSnO3 was analyzed by group theory and symmetry mode analysis.

The effects of octahedral tilting of RbANb2O7 (A = Bi, Nd) compounds was studied using density-functional theory. In this compound, the structural phase transition was correlated with two octahedral tilting modes (a-a-c0 tilting and a0a0c+ tilting), and magnitude of the octahedral tilting mode was analyzed in the optimized structure. The theoretical results correlated well with the recent experimental results on the ferroelectricity of RbBiNb2O7. The hybrid improper ferroelectricity resulting from the coupling of two octahedral tilting modes and off center displacement mode was analyzed by group theory and symmetry mode analysis. The detailed relationship of the tilting modes to the structural phase transition and the detailed physical properties of ferroelectricity are also presented.
Advances in complex oxide heteroepitaxy have highlighted the enormous potential of utilizing strain engineering via lattice mismatch to control ferroelectricity in thin-film heterostructures. This approach, however, lacks the ability to produce large and continuously variable strain states, thus limiting the potential for designing and tuning the desired properties of ferroelectric films. Here, we observe and explore dynamic strain-induced ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ by laminating freestanding oxide films onto a stretchable polymer substrate. Using a combination of scanning probe microscopy, optical second harmonic generation measurements, and atomistic modeling, we demonstrate robust room-temperature ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ with 2.0% uniaxial tensile strain, corroborated by the notable features of 180{deg} ferroelectric domains and an extrapolated transition temperature of 400 K. Our work reveals the enormous potential of employing oxide membranes to create and enhance ferroelectricity in environmentally benign lead-free oxides, which hold great promise for applications ranging from non-volatile memories and microwave electronics.
Distortions of the oxygen octahedra influence the fundamental electronic structure of perovskite oxides, such as their bandwidth and exchange interactions. Utilizing a fully ab-initio methodology based on density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT), we study the crystal and magnetic structure of SrMoO$_3$. Comparing our results with DFT+$U$ performed on the same footing, we find that DFT+$U$ overestimates the propensity for magnetic ordering, as well as the octahedral rotations, leading to a different ground state structure. This demonstrates that structural distortions can be highly sensitive to electronic correlation effects, and to the considered magnetic state, even in a moderately correlated metal such as SrMoO$_3$. Moreover, by comparing different downfolding schemes, we demonstrate the robustness of the DFT+DMFT method for obtaining structural properties, highlighting its versatility for applications to a broad range of materials.
Oxygen octahedral rotations have been measured in short-period (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(SrMnO$_3$)$_m$ superlattices using synchrotron diffraction. The in-plane and out-of-plane bond angles and lengths are found to systematically vary with superlattice composition. Rotations are suppressed in structures with $m>n$, producing a nearly cubic form of LaNiO$_3$. Large rotations are present in structures with $m<n$, leading to reduced bond angles in SrMnO$_3$. The metal-oxygen-metal bond lengths decrease as rotations are reduced, in contrast to behavior previously observed in strained, single layer films. This result demonstrates that superlattice structures can be used to stabilize non-equilibrium octahedral behavior in a manner distinct from epitaxial strain, providing a novel means to engineer the electronic and ferroic properties of oxide heterostructures.

Charge dipole moment and spin moment rarely coexist in single-phase bulk materials except in some multiferroics. Despite the progress in the past decade, for most multiferroics their magnetoelectric performance remains poor due to the intrinsic exclusion between charge dipole and spin moment. As an alternative approach, the oxide heterostructures may evade the intrinsic limits in bulk materials and provide more attractive potential to realize the magnetoelectric functions. Here we perform a first-principles study on LaAlO$_3$/PbTiO$_3$ superlattices. Although neither of the components is magnetic, magnetic moments emerge at the ferroelectric domain walls of PbTiO$_3$ in these superlattices. Such a twist between ferroelectric domain and local magnetic moment, not only manifests an interesting type of multiferroicity, but also is possible useful to pursuit the electrical-control of magnetism in nanoscale heterostructures.
