We call attention to a class of current-quark mass dependent multi-quark interaction terms which break explicitly the chiral $SU(3)_Ltimes SU(3)_R$ and $U_A(1)$ symmetries. They complete the set of effective quark interactions that contribute at the same order in $N_c$ as the t Hooft flavor determinant interaction and the eight quark interactions in the phase of spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. The $N_c$ classification scheme matches the counting rules based on arguments set by the scale of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. Together with the leading in $N_c$ four quark Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian and current quark mass matrix, the model is apt to account for the correct empirical ordering and magnitude of the splitting of states in the low lying mass spectra of spin zero mesons. The new terms turn out to be essential for the ordering $m_K < m_eta$ in the pseudoscalar sector and $m_{kappa_0} < m_{a_0}sim m_{f0}$ for the scalars.

An improved quark mass density- dependent model with the non-linear scalar sigma field and the $omega$-meson field is presented. We show that the present model can describe saturation properties, the equation of state, the compressibility and the effective nuclear mass of nuclear matter under mean field approximation successfully. The comparison of the present model and the quark-meson coupling model is addressed.

In-medium properties of the low-lying baryons are studied in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, focusing on the $Sigma_b$ and $Xi_b$ baryons. It is predicted that the Lorentz-scalar effective mass of $Sigma_b$ becomes smaller than that of $Xi_b$ at moderate nuclear matter density, and as the density increases, namely, $m^*_{Sigma_b} < m^*_{Xi_b}$, although in vacuum $m_{Sigma_b} > m_{Xi_b}$. We also study the effects of the repulsive Lorentz-vector potentials on the excitation energies of these bottom baryons.
The quark degrees of freedom of the QGP with special focus on mass effects are investigated. A next-to-leading-order perturbation theory approach with quark mass dependence is applied and compared to lattice QCD results.

We consider the quark-meson-model in a finite three-dimensional volume using the Schwinger proper-time renormalization group. We derive and solve the flow equations for finite volume in local potential approximation. In order to break chiral symmetry in the finite volume, we introduce a small current quark mass. The corresponding effective meson potential breaks chiral O(4) symmetry explicitly, depending on sigma and pion fields separately. We calculate the volume dependence of the pion mass and of the pion decay constant with the renormalization group flow equations and compare with recent results from chiral perturbation theory in a finite volume.
We investigate the invariant-mass distribution of top-quark pairs near the $2m_t$ threshold, which has strong impact on the determination of the top-quark mass $m_t$. We show that higher-order non-relativistic corrections lead to large contributions which are not included in the state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. We derive a factorization formula to resum such corrections to all orders in the strong-coupling, and calculate necessary ingredients to perform the resummation at next-to-leading power. We combine the resummation with fixed-order results and present phenomenologically relevant numeric results. We find that the resummation effect significantly enhances the differential cross section in the threshold region, and makes the theoretical prediction more compatible with experimental data. We estimate that using our prediction in the determination of $m_t$ will lead to a value closer to the result of direct measurement.
