When light is absorbed by a semiconductor, photoexcited charge carriers enhance the absorption of far-infrared radiation due to intraband transitions. We observe the opposite behavior in monolayer graphene, a zero-gap semiconductor with linear dispersion. By using time domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy in conjunction with optical pump excitation, we observe a reduced absorption of THz radiation in photoexcited graphene. The measured spectral shape of the differential optical conductivity exhibits non-Drude behavior. We discuss several possible mechanisms that contribute to the observed low-frequency non-equilibrium optical response of graphene.

We study graphene on a photonic crystal operating in the terahertz (THz) spectral range. We show that the absorption of graphene becomes a modulated function of frequency and can be enhanced by more than three times at specific frequency values, depending on the parameters of the system. The problem of a semi-infinite photonic crystal is also solved.

The diffusion of electron-hole pairs, which are excited in an intrinsic graphene by the ultrashort focused laser pulse in mid-IR or visible spectral region, is described for the cases of peak-like or spread over the passive region distributions of carriers. The spatio-temporal transient optical response on a high-frequency probe beam appears to be strongly dependent on the regime of diffusion and can be used for verification of the elasic relaxation mechanism. Sign flip of the differential transmission coefficient takes place due to interplay of the carrier-induced contribution and weak dynamic conductivity of undoped graphene.
Resonance diffraction in the periodic array of graphene micro-ribbons is theoretically studied following a recent experiment [L. Ju et al, Nature Nanotech. 6, 630 (2011)]. Systematic studies over a wide range of parameters are presented. It is shown that a much richer resonant picture would be observable for higher relaxation times of charge carriers: more resonances appear and transmission can be totally suppressed. The comparison with the absorption cross-section of a single ribbon shows that the resonant features of the periodic array are associated with leaky plasmonic modes. The longest-wavelength resonance provides the highest visibility of the transmission dip and has the strongest spectral shift and broadening with respect to the single-ribbon resonance, due to collective effects.

Electron-electron (e-e) interaction is known as a source of logarithmic renormalizations for Dirac fermions in quantum field theory. The renormalization of electron--optical phonon coupling (EPC) by e-e interaction, which plays a pivotal role in hot carrier and phonon dynamics, has been discussed after the discovery of graphene. We investigate the hot carrier dynamics and the EPC strength using time-resolved ultrabroadband terahertz (THz) spectroscopy combined with numerical simulation based on the Boltzmann transport equation and comprehensive temperature model. The large negative photoconductivity and the non-Drude behavior of THz conductivity spectra appear under high pump fluence and can be attributed to the temporal variation of the hot carrier distribution and scattering rate. We successfully estimate the dimensionless EPC matrix element of the $A_1^{prime}$ optical phonon mode near the $mathbf{K}$ point as $lambda_{mathbf{K}} approx$0.09 from the fitting of THz conductivity spectra and temporal evolution of transient THz reflectivity, which is slightly larger than the prediction of the renormalization group.

Graphene, a monolayer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern, provides a unique two-dimensional (2D) system exhibiting exotic phenomena such as quantum Hall effects, massless Dirac quasiparticle excitations and universal absorption & conductivity. The linear energy-momentum dispersion relation in graphene also offers the opportunity to mimic the physics of far-away relativistic particles like neutron stars and white dwarfs. In this letter, we perform a counterintuitive ultrafast pump-probe experiment with high photon energies to isolate the Drude-like intraband dynamics of photoexcited carriers. We directly demonstrate the relativistic nature of the photoexcited Dirac quasiparticles by observing a nonlinear scaling of the response with the density of photoexcited carriers. This is in striking contrast to the linear scaling that is usually observed in conventional materials. Our results also indicate strong electron-phonon coupling in graphene, leading to a sub-100 femtosecond thermalization between high energy photoexcited carriers and optical phonons.
