A 4D-Var data assimilation technique is applied to a ORCA-2 configuration of the NEMO in order to identify the optimal parametrization of the boundary conditions on the lateral boundaries as well as on the bottom and on the surface of the ocean. The influence of the boundary conditions on the solution is analyzed as in the assimilation window and beyond the window. It is shown that optimal conditions for vertical operators allows to get stronger and finer jet streams (Gulf Stream, Kuroshio) in the solution. Analyzing the reasons of the jets reinforcement, we see that the major impact of the data assimilation is made on the parametrization of the bottom boundary conditions for lateral velocities u and v. Automatic generation of the tangent and adjoint codes is also discussed. Tapenade software is shown to be able to produce the adjoint code that can be used after a memory usage optimization.

A 4D-Var data assimilation technique is applied to the rectangular-box configuration of the NEMO in order to identify the optimal parametrization of boundary conditions at lateral boundaries. The case of the staircase-shaped coastlines is studied by rotating the model grid around the center of the box. It is shown that, in some cases, the formulation of the boundary conditions at the exact boundary leads to appearance of exponentially growing modes while optimal boundary conditions allow to correct the errors induced by the staircase-like appriximation of the coastline.
We provide a survey of recent results on model calibration by Optimal Transport. We present the general framework and then discuss the calibration of local, and local-stochastic, volatility models to European options, the joint VIX/SPX calibration problem as well as calibration to some path-dependent options. We explain the numerical algorithms and present examples both on synthetic and market data.
Inspired by the theoretical results on optimal preconditioning stated by Ng, R.Chan, and Tang in the framework of Reflective boundary conditions (BCs), in this paper we present analogous results for Anti-Reflective BCs, where an additional technical difficulty is represented by the non orthogonal character of the Anti-Reflective transform and indeed the technique of Ng, R.Chan, and Tang can not be used. Nevertheless, in both cases, the optimal preconditioner is the blurring matrix associated to the symmetrized Point Spread Function (PSF). The geometrical idea on which our proof is based is very simple and general, so it may be useful in the future to prove theoretical results for new proposed boundary conditions. Computational results show that the preconditioning strategy is effective and it is able to give rise to a meaningful acceleration both for slightly and highly non-symmetric PSFs.
We introduce a new technique, which we call the boundary method, for solving semi-discrete optimal transport problems with a wide range of cost functions. The boundary method reduces the effective dimension of the problem, thus improving complexity. For cost functions equal to a p-norm with p in (1,infinity), we provide mathematical justification, convergence analysis, and algorithmic development. Our testing supports the boundary method with these p-norms, as well as other, more general cost functions.

We apply recently developed smooth boundary conditions to the quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. At half-filling, where there is no sign problem, we show that the thermodynamic limit is reached more rapidly with smooth rather than with periodic or open boundary conditions. Away from half-filling, where ordinarily the simulation cannot be carried out at low temperatures due to the existence of the sign problem, we show that smooth boundary conditions allow us to reach significantly lower temperatures. We examine pairing correlation functions away from half-filling in order to determine the possible existence of a superconducting state. On a $10times 10$ lattice for $U=4$, at a filling of $langle n rangle = 0.87$ and an inverse temperature of $beta=10$, we did find enhancement of the $d$-wave correlations with respect to the non-interacting case, a possible sign of $d$-wave superconductivity.
