We consider spherically symmetric black holes in generic Lovelock gravity. Using geometrodynamical variables we do a complete Hamiltonian analysis, including derivation of the super-Hamiltonian and super-momentum constraints and verification of suitable boundary conditions for asymptotically flat black holes. Our analysis leads to a remarkably simple fully reduced Hamiltonian for the vacuum gravitational sector that provides the starting point for the quantization of Lovelock block holes. Finally, we derive the completely reduced equations of motion for the collapse of a spherically symmetric charged, self-gravitating complex scalar field in generalized flat slice (Painlev{e}-Gullstrand) coordinates.

We study quasinormal modes of black holes in Lovelock gravity. We formulate the WKB method adapted to Lovelock gravity for the calculation of quasinormal frequencies (QNFs). As a demonstration, we calculate various QNFs of Lovelock black holes in seven and eight dimensions. We find that the QNFs show remarkable features depending on the coefficients of the Lovelock terms, the species of perturbations, and spacetime dimensions. In the case of the scalar field, when we increase the coefficient of the third order Lovelock term, the real part of QNFs increases, but the decay rate becomes small irrespective of the mass of the black hole. For small black holes, the decay rate ceases to depend on the Gauss-Bonnet term. In the case of tensor type perturbations of the metric field, the tendency of the real part of QNFs is opposite to that of the scalar field. The QNFs of vector type perturbations of the metric show no particular behavior. The behavior of QNFs of the scalar type perturbations of the metric field is similar to the vector type. However, available data are rather sparse, which indicates that the WKB method is not applicable to many models for this sector.
In the present paper, a new class of black hole solutions is constructed in even dimensional Lovelock Born-Infeld theory. These solutions are interesting since, in some respects, they are closer to black hole solutions of an odd dimensional Lovelock Chern-Simons theory than to the more usual black hole solutions in even dimensions. This hybrid behavior arises when non-Einstein base manifolds are considered. The entropies of these solutions have been analyzed using Wald formalism. These metrics exhibit a quite non-trivial behavior. Their entropies can change sign and can even be identically zero depending on the geometry of the corresponding base manifolds. Therefore, the request of thermodynamical stability constrains the geometry of the non-Einstein base manifolds. It will be shown that some of these solutions can support non-vanishing torsion. Eventually, the possibility to define a sort of topological charge associated with torsion will be discussed.
It is found that, when the coupling constants $alpha_p$ in the theory of regularized Lovelock gravity are properly chosen and the number of Lovelock tensors $prightarrow infty$, there exist a fairly large number of nonsingular (singularity free) black holes and nonsingular universes. Some nonsingular black holes have numerous horizons and numerous energy levels (a bit like atom) inside the outer event horizon. On the other hand, some nonsingular universes start and end in two de Sitter phases. The ratio of energy densities for the two phases are $120$ orders. It is thus helpful to understand the cosmological constant problem.
We numerically compute the renormalized expectation value $langlehat{Phi}^{2}rangle_{ren}$ of a minimally-coupled massless quantum scalar field in the interior of a four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, in both the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states. To this end we use a recently developed mode-sum renormalization scheme based on covariant point splitting. In both quantum states, $langlehat{Phi}^{2}rangle_{ren}$ is found to approach a emph{finite} value at the inner horizon (IH). The final approach to the IH asymptotic value is marked by an inverse-power tail $r_{*}^{-n}$, where $r_{*}$ is the Regge-Wheeler tortoise coordinate, and with $n=2$ for the Hartle-Hawking state and $n=3$ for the Unruh state. We also report here the results of an analytical computation of these inverse-power tails of $langlehat{Phi}^{2}rangle_{ren}$ near the IH. Our numerical results show very good agreement with this analytical derivation (for both the power index and the tail amplitude), in both quantum states. Finally, from this asymptotic behavior of $langlehat{Phi}^{2}rangle_{ren}$ we analytically compute the leading-order asymptotic behavior of the trace $langlehat{T}_{mu}^{mu}rangle_{ren}$ of the renormalized stress-energy tensor at the IH. In both quantum states this quantity is found to diverge like $b(r-r_{-})^{-1}r_{*}^{-n-2}$ (with $n$ specified above, and with a known parameter $b$). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully-quantitative derivation of the asymptotic behavior of these renormalized quantities at the inner horizon of a four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.

We present the first numerically stable nonlinear evolution for the leading-order gravitational effective field theory (Quadratic Gravity) in the spherically-symmetric sector. The formulation relies on (i) harmonic gauge to cast the evolution system into quasi-linear form (ii) the Cartoon method to reduce to spherical symmetry in keeping with harmonic gauge, and (iii) order-reduction to 1st-order (in time) by means of introducing auxiliary variables. Well-posedness of the respective initial-value problem is numerically confirmed by evolving randomly perturbed flat-space and black-hole initial data. Our study serves as a proof-of-principle for the possibility of stable numerical evolution in the presence of higher derivatives.
