We investigate the competition between different orders in the two-leg spin ladder with a ring-exchange interaction by means of a bosonic approach. The latter is defined in terms of spin-1 hardcore bosons which treat the Neel and vector chirality order parameters on an equal footing. A semiclassical approach of the resulting model describes the phases of the two-leg spin ladder with a ring-exchange. In particular, we derive the low-energy effective actions which govern the physical properties of the rung-singlet and dominant vector chirality phases. As a by-product of our approach, we reveal the mutual induction phenomenon between spin and chirality with, for instance, the emergence of a vector-chirality phase from the application of a magnetic field in bilayer systems coupled by four-spin exchange interactions.

We applied the Recurrent Variational Approach to the two-leg Hubbard ladder. At half-filling, our variational Ansatz was a generalization of the resonating valence bond state. At finite doping, hole pairs were allowed to move in the resonating valence bond background. The results obtained by the Recurrent Variational Approach were compared with results from Density Matrix Renormalization Group.
We present a field theory analysis of a model of two SU(2n)-invariant magnetic chains coupled by a generic interaction preserving time reversal and inversion symmetry. Contrary to the SU(2)-invariant case the zero-temperature phase diagram of such two-leg spin ladder does not contain topological phases. Only generalized Valence Bond Solid phases are stabilized when n>1 with different wave vectors and ground-state degeneracies. In particular, we find a phase which is made of a cluster of 2n spins put in an SU(2n) singlet state. For n=3, this cluster phase is relevant to ytterbium ultracold atoms, with an emergent SU(6) symmetry, loaded in double well optical lattice.
We report on zero-field muon spin rotation, electron spin resonance and polarized Raman scattering measurements of the coupled quantum spin ladder Ba2CuTeO6. Zero-field muon spin rotation and electron spin resonance probes disclose a successive crossover from a paramagnetic through a spin-liquid-like into a magnetically ordered state with decreasing temperature. More significantly, the two-magnon Raman response obeys a T-linear scaling relation in its peak energy, linewidth and intensity. This critical scaling behavior presents an experimental signature of proximity to a quantum critical point from an ordered side in Ba2CuTeO6.
New phases with broken discrete Ising symmetries are uncovered in quantum materials with strong electronic correlations. The two-leg ladder cuprate textbf{$Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$} hosts a very rich phase diagram where, upon hole doping, the system exhibits a spin liquid state ending to an intriguing ordered magnetic state at larger $Ca$ content. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we report here the existence of short range magnetism in this material for two $Ca$ contents, whose origin cannot be ascribed to Cu spins. This magnetism develops exclusively within the two-leg ladders with a diffraction pattern at forbidden Bragg scattering which is the hallmark of loop current-like magnetism breaking both time-reversal and parity symmetries. Our discovery shows local discrete symmetry breaking in a one dimensional spin liquid system as theoretically predicted. It further suggests that a loop current-like phase could trigger the long range magnetic order reported at larger doping in two-leg ladder cuprates.
We present single-crystal growth and magnetic property studies of tellurium-bridged copper spin-1/2 system Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$. The spin-exchange interaction among copper spins via Cu-O-Te-O-Cu super-superexchange route leads to a novel two-leg spin ladder system. Spin susceptibility $chi$(T) data indicates that the triclinic Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$ undergoes a stepwise crossover for exchange couplings revealed by a broad maximum near T$_{max}$$sim$75~K and an anisotropic cusp in $frac{dchi}{dT}$(T) to signify a three dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic long-range ordering (LRO). The 3D LRO has been suggested from the anisotropic behavior of $chi$(T) with strong c-axis spin anisotropy and the signature of spin flop transition from the isothermal magnetization below $T_N$. Analysis of magnetic heat capacity (Cm) at $T_N$~15 K indicates that most of the spin entropy (~92% ) has already been released above $T_N$, which supports the picture of consecutive spin entropy reduction upon cooling with Te-bridged two-leg spin ladder system with strong intraladder and interladder couplings. Theoretical DFT+U calculations have been performed to search for the ground state magnetic configuration and also to evaluate exchange coupling constants that support the magnetic model deduced from the combined spin susceptibility and crystal structure symmetry analysis.
