We present a modular framework for articulatory animation synthesis using speech motion capture data obtained with electromagnetic articulography (EMA). Adapting a skeletal animation approach, the articulatory motion data is applied to a three-dimensional (3D) model of the vocal tract, creating a portable resource that can be integrated in an audiovisual (AV) speech synthesis platform to provide realistic animation of the tongue and teeth for a virtual character. The framework also provides an interface to articulatory animation synthesis, as well as an example application to illustrate its use with a 3D game engine. We rely on cross-platform, open-source software and open standards to provide a lightweight, accessible, and portable workflow.
The importance of modeling speech articulation for high-quality audiovisual (AV) speech synthesis is widely acknowledged. Nevertheless, while state-of-the-art, data-driven approaches to facial animation can make use of sophisticated motion capture techniques, the animation of the intraoral articulators (viz. the tongue, jaw, and velum) typically makes use of simple rules or viseme morphing, in stark contrast to the otherwise high quality of facial modeling. Using appropriate speech production data could significantly improve the quality of articulatory animation for AV synthesis.
Text-to-speech and co-speech gesture synthesis have until now been treated as separate areas by two different research communities, and applications merely stack the two technologies using a simple system-level pipeline. This can lead to modeling inefficiencies and may introduce inconsistencies that limit the achievable naturalness. We propose to instead synthesize the two modalities in a single model, a new problem we call integrated speech and gesture synthesis (ISG). We also propose a set of models modified from state-of-the-art neural speech-synthesis engines to achieve this goal. We evaluate the models in three carefully-designed user studies, two of which evaluate the synthesized speech and gesture in isolation, plus a combined study that evaluates the models like they will be used in real-world applications -- speech and gesture presented together. The results show that participants rate one of the proposed integrated synthesis models as being as good as the state-of-the-art pipeline system we compare against, in all three tests. The model is able to achieve this with faster synthesis time and greatly reduced parameter count compared to the pipeline system, illustrating some of the potential benefits of treating speech and gesture synthesis together as a single, unified problem. The development of pathological speech systems is currently hindered by the lack of a standardised objective evaluation framework. In this work, (1) we utilise existing detection and analysis techniques to propose a general framework for the consistent evaluation of synthetic pathological speech. This framework evaluates the voice quality and the intelligibility aspects of speech and is shown to be complementary using our experiments. (2) Using our proposed evaluation framework, we develop and test a dysarthric voice conversion system (VC) using CycleGAN-VC and a PSOLA-based speech rate modification technique. We show that the developed system is able to synthesise dysarthric speech with different levels of speech intelligibility.
Electromagnetic articulography (EMA) captures the position and orientation of a number of markers, attached to the articulators, during speech. As such, it performs the same function for speech that conventional motion capture does for full-body movements acquired with optical modalities, a long-time staple technique of the animation industry. In this paper, EMA data is processed from a motion-capture perspective and applied to the visualization of an existing multimodal corpus of articulatory data, creating a kinematic 3D model of the tongue and teeth by adapting a conventional motion capture based animation paradigm. This is accomplished using off-the-shelf, open-source software. Such an animated model can then be easily integrated into multimedia applications as a digital asset, allowing the analysis of speech production in an intuitive and accessible manner. The processing of the EMA data, its co-registration with 3D data from vocal tract magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and dental scans, and the modeling workflow are presented in detail, and several issues discussed.
We contribute MobileVisFixer, a new method to make visualizations more mobile-friendly. Although mobile devices have become the primary means of accessing information on the web, many existing visualizations are not optimized for small screens and can lead to a frustrating user experience. Currently, practitioners and researchers have to engage in a tedious and time-consuming process to ensure that their designs scale to screens of different sizes, and existing toolkits and libraries provide little support in diagnosing and repairing issues. To address this challenge, MobileVisFixer automates a mobile-friendly visualization re-design process with a novel reinforcement learning framework. To inform the design of MobileVisFixer, we first collected and analyzed SVG-based visualizations on the web, and identified five common mobile-friendly issues. MobileVisFixer addresses four of these issues on single-view Cartesian visualizations with linear or discrete scales by a Markov Decision Process model that is both generalizable across various visualizations and fully explainable. MobileVisFixer deconstructs charts into declarative formats, and uses a greedy heuristic based on Policy Gradient methods to find solutions to this difficult, multi-criteria optimization problem in reasonable time. In addition, MobileVisFixer can be easily extended with the incorporation of optimization algorithms for data visualizations. Quantitative evaluation on two real-world datasets demonstrates the effectiveness and generalizability of our method.
