We review different scenarios for the motion and merging of Dirac points in two dimensional crystals. These different types of merging can be classified according to a winding number (a topological Berry phase) attached to each Dirac point. For each scenario, we calculate the Landau level spectrum and show that it can be quantitatively described by a semiclassical quantization rule for the constant energy areas. This quantization depends on how many Dirac points are enclosed by these areas. We also emphasize that different scenarios are characterized by different numbers of topologically protected zero energy Landau levels

The energy spectra for the tight-binding models on the Lieb and kagome lattices both exhibit a flat band. We present a model which continuously interpolates between these two limits. The flat band located in the middle of the three-band spectrum for the Lieb lattice is distorted, generating two pairs of Dirac points. While the upper pair evolves into graphene-like Dirac cones in the kagome limit, the low energy pair evolves until it merges producing the band-bottom flat band. The topological characterization of the Dirac points is achieved by projecting the Hamiltonian on the two relevant bands in order to obtain an effective Dirac Hamiltonian. The low energy pair of Dirac points is particularly interesting in this respect: when they emerge, they have opposite winding numbers, but as they merge, they have the same winding number. This apparent paradox is due to a continuous rotation of their states in pseudo-spin space, characterized by a winding vector. This simple, but quite rich model, suggests a way to a systematic characterization of two-band contact points in multiband systems.
New Dirac points appear when periodic potentials are applied to graphene, and there are many interesting effects near these new Dirac points. Here we investigate the $textit{Zitterbewegung}$ effect of fermions described by a Gaussian wave packet in graphene superlattice near new Dirac points. The $textit{Zitterbewegung}$ near different Dirac points has similar characteristics, while Fermions near new Dirac points have different group velocities in both $x$- and $y$-direction, which causes the different properties of the $textit{Zitterbewegung}$ near new Dirac points. We also investigate the $textit{Zitterbewegung}$ effect influenced by all Dirac points, and get the evolution with changing potential. Our intensive results suggest that graphene superlattice may provide an appropriate system to study $textit{Zitterbewegung}$ effect near new Dirac points experimentally.
The electronic structure of a crystalline solid is largely determined by its lattice structure. Recent advances in van der Waals solids, artificial crystals with controlled stacking of two-dimensional (2D) atomic films, have enabled the creation of materials with novel electronic structures. In particular, stacking graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) introduces moire superlattice that fundamentally modifies graphenes band structure and gives rise to secondary Dirac points (SDPs). Here we find that the formation of a moire superlattice in graphene on hBN yields new, unexpected consequences: a set of tertiary Dirac points (TDPs) emerge, which give rise to additional sets of Landau levels when the sample is subjected to an external magnetic field. Our observations hint at the formation of a hidden Kekule superstructure on top of the moire superlattice under appropriate carrier doping and magnetic fields.
We combined periodic ripples and electrostatic potentials to form curved graphene superlattices and studied the effects of space-dependent Fermi velocity induced from curvature on their electronic properties. With equal periods and symmetric potentials, the Dirac points do not move, but their locations shift under asymmetric potentials. This shift can be tuned by curvature and potentials. Tunable extra gaps in band structures can appear with unequal periods. The existence of new Dirac points is proposed, such that these new Dirac points can appear under smaller potentials with curvature, and their locations can be changed even under a fixed potential by adjusting the curvature. Our results suggest that curvature provides a new possible dimension to tune the electronic properties in graphene superlattices and a platform to more easier study physics near new Dirac points.
Periodically driven quantum systems host a range of non-equilibrium phenomena which are unrealizable at equilibrium. Discrete time-translational symmetry in a periodically driven many-body system can be spontaneously broken to form a discrete time crystal, a putative quantum phase of matter. We present the observation of discrete time crystalline order in a driven system of paramagnetic $P$ -donor impurities in isotopically enriched $^{28}Si$ cooled below $10$ K. The observations exhibit a stable subharmonic peak at half the drive frequency which remains pinned even in the presence of pulse error, a signature of DTC order. We propose a theoretical model based on the paradigmatic central spin model which is in good agreement with experimental observations, and investigate the role of dissipation in the stabilisation of the DTC. Both experiment and theory indicate that the order in this system is primarily a dissipative effect, and which persists in the presence of spin-spin interactions. We present a theoretical phase diagram as a function of interactions and dissipation for the central spin model which is consistent with the experiments. This opens up questions about the interplay of coherent interaction and dissipation for time-translation symmetry breaking in many-body Floquet systems.
