We report on a quantitative experimental determination of the three-dimensional magnetization vector trajectory in GaMnAs by means of the static and time-resolved pump-and-probe magneto-optical measurements. The experiments are performed in a normal incidence geometry and the time evolution of the magnetization vector is obtained without any numerical modeling of magnetization dynamics. Our experimental method utilizes different polarization dependences of the polar Kerr effect and magnetic linear dichroism to disentangle the pump-induced out-of-plane and in-plane motions of magnetization, respectively. We demonstrate that the method is sensitive enough to allow for the determination of small angle excitations of the magnetization in GaMnAs. The method is readily applicable to other magnetic materials with sufficiently strong circular and linear magneto-optical effects.

We use femtosecond optical pulses to induce, control and monitor magnetization precession in ferromagnetic Ga0.965Mn0.035As. At temperatures below ~40 K we observe coherent oscillations of the local Mn spins, triggered by an ultrafast photoinduced reorientation of the in-plane easy axis. The amplitude saturation of the oscillations above a certain pump intensity indicates that the easy axis remains unchanged above ~TC/2. We find that the observed magnetization precession damping (Gilbert damping) is strongly dependent on pump laser intensity, but largely independent on ambient temperature. We provide a physical interpretation of the observed light-induced collective Mn-spin relaxation and precession.
In this work we describe an experimental setup for spatially-resolved pump-probe experiment with integrated wide-field magneto-optical (MO) microscope. The MO microscope can be used to study ferromagnetic materials with both perpendicular-to-plane and in-plane magnetic anisotropy via polar Kerr and Voigt effects, respectively. The functionality of the Voigt effect-based microscope was tested using an in-plane magnetized ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. It was revealed that the presence of mechanical defects in the (Ga,Mn)As epilayer alters significantly the magnetic anisotropy in their proximity. The importance of MO experiments with simultaneous temporal and spatial resolutions was demonstrated using (Ga,Mn)As sample attached to a piezoelectric actuator, which produces a voltage-controlled strain. We observed a considerably different behavior in different parts of the sample that enabled us to identify sample parts where the epilayer magnetic anisotropy was significantly modified by a presence of the piezostressor and where it was not. Finally, we discuss the possible applicability of our experimental setup for the research of compensated antiferromagnets, where only MO effects even in magnetic moments are present.

By synchronizing a microwave waveform with the synchrotron x-ray pulses, we use the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of the Py (Ni81Fe19) layer in a Py/Cu/Cu75Mn25/Cu/Co multilayer to pump a pure spin current into the Cu75Mn25 spacer layer, and then directly probe the spin current in the Cu75Mn25 layer by a time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). This element-specific pump-probe measurement unambiguously identifies the AC spin current in the Cu75Mn25 layer. In addition, phase resolved x-ray measurements reveal a characteristic bipolar phase behavior of the Co spins that is a fingerprint of spin-current driven spin precession.

We have performed a systematic magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy study of GaMnAs with varying Mn densities as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and photon energy. Unlike previous studies, the magnetization easy axis was perpendicular to the sample surface, allowing us to take remanent polar Kerr spectra in the absence of an external magnetic field. The remanent Kerr angle strongly depended on the photon energy, exhibiting a large positive peak at $sim1.7$ eV. This peak increased in intensity and blue-shifted with Mn doping and further blue-shifted with annealing. Using a 30-band ${bf kcdot p}$ model with antiferromagnetic $s,p$-$d$ exchange interaction, we calculated the dielectric tensor of GaMnAs in the interband transition region, assuming that our samples are in the metallic regime and the impurity band has merged with the valence band. We successfully reproduced the observed spectra without emph{ad hoc} introduction of the optical transitions originated from impurity states in the band gap. These results lead us to conclude that above-bandgap magneto-optical Kerr rotation in ferromagnetic GaMnAs is predominantly determined by interband transitions between the conduction and valence bands.
We report results from ultrafast two-color optical pump-probe spectroscopy on bulk $beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$. A two-photon absorption scheme is used to photoexcite carriers with the pump pulse and free-carrier absorption of the probe pulse is used to record the subsequent dynamics of the photoexcited carriers. Our results are consistent with carrier recombination via defect-assisted processes. We also observe transient polarization-selective optical absorption of the probe pulse by defect states under nonequilibrium conditions. A rate equation model for electron and hole capture by defects is proposed and used to explain the data. Whereas the rate constants for electron capture by defects are found to be temperature-independent, they are measured to be strongly temperature-dependent for hole capture and point to a lattice deformation/relaxation process accompanying hole capture. Our results shed light on the mechanisms and rates associated with carrier capture by defects in $beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$.
