Prolongations of a group extension can be studied in a more general situation that we call group extensions of the co-type of a crossed module. Cohomology classification of such extensions is obtained by applying the obstruction theory of monoidal functors.

Each Gr-functor of the type $(varphi,f)$ of a Gr-category of the type $(Pi,C)$ has the obstruction be an element $overline{k}in H^3(Pi,C).$ When this obstruction vanishes, there exists a bijection between congruence classes of Gr-functors of the type $(varphi,f)$ and the cohomology group $H^2(Pi,C).$ Then the relation of Gr-category theory and the group extension problem can be established and used to prove that each Gr-category is Gr-equivalent to a strict one.
In this paper, we state the notion of morphisms in the category of abelian crossed modules and prove that this category is equivalent to the category of strict Picard categories and regular symmetric monoidal functors. The theory of obstructions for symmetric monoidal functors and symmetric cohomology groups are applied to show a treatment of the group extension problem of the type of an abelian crossed module.

A braided monoidal category may be considered a $3$-category with one object and one $1$-morphism. In this paper, we show that, more generally, $3$-categories with one object and $1$-morphisms given by elements of a group $G$ correspond to $G$-crossed braided categories, certain mathematical structures which have emerged as important invariants of low-dimensional quantum field theories. More precisely, we show that the 4-category of $3$-categories $mathcal{C}$ equipped with a 3-functor $mathrm{B}G to mathcal{C}$ which is essentially surjective on objects and $1$-morphisms is equivalent to the $2$-category of $G$-crossed braided categories. This provides a uniform approach to various constructions of $G$-crossed braided categories.
We construct a dynamical lattice model based on a crossed module of possibly non-abelian finite groups. Its degrees of freedom are defined on links and plaquettes, while gauge transformations are based on vertices and links of the underlying lattice. We specify the Hilbert space, define basic observables (including the Hamiltonian) and initiate a~discussion on the models phase diagram. The constructed model generalizes, and in appropriate limits reduces to, topological theories with symmetries described by groups and crossed modules, lattice Yang-Mills theory and $2$-form electrodynamics. We conclude by reviewing classifying spaces of crossed modules, with an emphasis on the direct relation between their geometry and properties of gauge theories under consideration.
