In this article we explore a modification in the problem of controlling the rotation of a two level quantum system from an initial state to a final state in minimum time. Specifically we consider the case where the qubit is being weakly monitored -- albeit with an assumption that both the measurement strength as well as the angular velocity are assumed to be control signals. This modification alters the dynamics significantly and enables the exploitation of the measurement backaction to assist in achieving the control objective. The proposed method yields a significant speedup in achieving the desired state transfer compared to previous approaches. These results are demonstrated via numerical solutions for an example problem on a single qubit.

Physical implementations of quantum bits can contain coherent transitions to energetically close non-qubit states. In particular, for anharmonic oscillator systems such as the superconducting phase qubit and the transmon a two-level approximation is insufficient. We apply optimal control theory to the envelope of a resonant Rabi pulse in a qubit in the presence of a single, weakly off-resonant leakage level. The gate error of a spin flip operation reduces by orders of magnitude compared to simple pulse shapes. Near-perfect gates can be achieved for any pulse duration longer than an intrinsic limit given by the nonlinearity. The pulses can be understood as composite sequences that refocus the leakage transition. We also discuss ways to improve the pulse shapes.
A quantum system may be purified, i.e., projected into a pure state, faster if one applies feedback operations during the measurement process. However existing results suggest that such an enhancement is only possible when the measurement efficiency exceeds 0.5, which is difficult to achieve experimentally. We address the task of finding the global optimal feedback control for purifying a single qubit in the presence of measurement inefficiency. We use the Bloch vector length, a more physical and practical quantity than purity, to assess the quality of the state, and employ a backward iteration algorithm to find the globally optimal strategy. Our results show that a speedup is available for quantum efficiencies well below 0.5, which opens the possibility of experimental implementation in existing systems.

Heisenbergs uncertainty relations for measurement quantify how well we can jointly measure two complementary observables and have attracted much experimental and theoretical attention recently. Here we provide an exact tradeoff between the worst-case errors in measuring jointly two observables of a qubit, i.e., all the allowed and forbidden pairs of errors, especially asymmetric ones, are exactly pinpointed. For each pair of optimal errors we provide an optimal joint measurement that is realizable without introducing any ancilla and entanglement. Possible experimental implementations are discussed and Toronto experiment [Rozema et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 100404 (2012)] can be readily adapted to an optimal joint measurement of two orthogonal observables.
Pulses to steer the time evolution of quantum systems can be designed with optimal control theory. In most cases it is the coherent processes that can be controlled and one optimizes the time evolution towards a target unitary process, sometimes also in the presence of non-controllable incoherent processes. Here we show how to extend the GRAPE algorithm in the case where the incoherent processes are controllable and the target time evolution is a non-unitary quantum channel. We perform a gradient search on a fidelity measure based on Choi matrices. We illustrate our algorithm by optimizing a phase qubit measurement pulse. We show how this technique can lead to large measurement contrast close to 99%. We also show, within the validity of our model, that this algorithm can produce short 1.4 ns pulses with 98.2% contrast.
We address the issue of safe optimal path planning under parametric uncertainties using a novel regularizer that allows trading off optimality with safety. The proposed regularizer leverages the notion that collisions may be modeled as constraint violations in an optimal control setting in order to produce open-loop trajectories with reduced risk of collisions. The risk of constraint violation is evaluated using a state-dependent relevance function and first-order variations in the constraint function with respect to parametric variations. The approach is generic and can be adapted to any optimal control formulation that deals with constraints under parametric uncertainty. Simulations using a holonomic robot avoiding multiple dynamic obstacles with uncertain velocities are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Finally, we introduce the car vs. train problem to emphasize the dependence of the resultant risk aversion behavior on the form of the constraint function used to derive the regularizer.
