We present results of an exclusive measurement of the first excited state of the Sigma hyperon, Sigma(1385)^+, produced in p+p -> Sigma^+ + K^+ + n at 3.5 GeV beam energy. The extracted data allow to study in detail the invariant mass distribution of the Sigma(1385)^+. The mass distribution is well described by a relativistic Breit-Wigner function with a maximum at m_0 = 1383.2 +- 0.9 MeV/c^2 and a width of 40.2 +- 2.1 MeV/c^2. The exclusive production cross-section comes out to be 22.27 +- 0.89 +- 1.56 +3.07 -2.10 mu b. Angular distributions of the Sigma(1385)^+ in different reference frames are found to be compatible with the hypothesis that 33 % of Sigma(1385)^+ result from the decay of an intermediate Delta^{++} resonance.

We present an analysis of the Lambda(1405) resonance produced in the reaction p+p->Sigma^{pm}+pi^{mp}+K+p at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy measured with HADES at GSI. The two charged decay channels Lambda(1405) -> Sigma^{pm}+pi^{mp} have been reconstructed for the first time in p+p collisions. The efficiency and acceptance-corrected spectral shapes show a peak position clearly below 1400 MeV/c^2. We find a total production cross section of sigma_{Lambda(1405)}=9.2 +- 0.9 +- 0.7 +3.3-1.0 mub. The analysis of its polar angle distribution suggests that the Lambda(1405) is produced isotropically in the p-p center of mass system.
We report on a measurement of hard photons (Eg>30 MeV) in the reaction Ar+Ca at 180A MeV at an energy in which photons from the decay of pi0 mesons are dominating. Simultaneous measurement with the TAPS spectrometer of the photon spectrum and photon-photon coincidences used for the identification of pi0 enabled the subtraction of pi0 contribution. The resulting photon spectrum exhibits an exponential shape with an inverse slope of E0=(53+-0.03(stat)-5+8(syst)) MeV. The photon multiplicity, equal to (1.21+-0.03(stat)+0.3-0.2(syst))10E0-2, is roughly one order of magnitude larger than the value extrapolated from existing systematics. This enhancement of the hard photon production is attributed to a strong increase in the contribution of secondary np collisions to the total photon yield. We conclude that, on average, the number of np collisions which contribute to the hard photon production is 7 times larger than the number of first chance np collisions in the reaction Ar+Ca at 180A MeV.
The $Lambda p$ interaction close to the $Sigma N$ threshold is considered. Specifically, the pronounced structure seen in production reactions like $K^-d to pi^- Lambda p$ and $ppto K^+ Lambda p$ around the $Sigma N$ threshold is analyzed. Modern interaction models of the coupled $Lambda N - Sigma N$ systems generate such a structure either due to the presence of a (deuteron-like) unstable bound state or of an inelastic virtual state. % A determination of the position of the prominent peak as observed in various experiments for the two aforementioned reactions leads to values that agree quite well with each other. Furthermore, the deduced mean value of $2128.7pm 0.3$ MeV for the peak position coincides practically with the threshold energy of the $Sigma^+ n$ channel. This supports the interpretation of the structure as a genuine cusp, signaling an inelastic virtual state in the $^3S_1-^3D_1$ partial wave of the $Sigma N$ isospin 1/2 channel. % There is also evidence for a second peak (or shoulder) in the data sets considered which appears at roughly 10-15 MeV above the $Sigma N$ threshold. However, its concrete position varies significantly from data set to data set and, thus, a theoretical interpretation is difficult.
Exclusive data on the reactions pp -> ppK+K- and pp -> pK+ Lambda/Sigma0 have been taken at the cooler synchrotron COSY close to threshold. At equal excess energies, an enhancement of the Lambda/Sigma0 ratio by one order of magnitude has been observed compared to data at higher excess energies. New results obtained at the COSY-11 facility explore the transition region between this low-energy Sigma0 suppression and excess energies of 60 MeV. A first total cross section for elementary antikaon production below the phi threshold has been determined, two orders of magnitude smaller compared to kaon production at the same excess energy.
