We present emph{c} axis infrared optical data on a number of Ba, Sr and Nd-doped cuprates of the La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (La214) series in which we observe significant deviations from the universal Josephson relation linking the normal state transport (DC conductivity $sigma_{DC}$ measured at $T_{c}$) with the superfluid density ($rho_{s}$): $rho_{s}proptosigma_{DC}(T_{c})$. We find the violation of Josephson scaling is associated with striking enhancement of the anisotropy in the superfluid density. The data allows us to link the breakdown of Josephson interlayer physics with the development of magnetic order in the CuO$_2$ planes.

The metallic state of the underdoped high-Tc cuprates has remained an enigma: How may seemingly disconnected Fermi surface segments, observed in zero magnetic field as a result of the opening of a partial gap (the pseudogap), possess conventional quasiparticle properties? How do the small Fermi-surface pockets evidenced by the observation of quantum oscillations (QO) emerge as superconductivity is suppressed in high magnetic fields? Such QO, discovered in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.5 (Y123) and YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124), signify the existence of a conventional Fermi surface (FS). However, due to the complexity of the crystal structures of Y123 and Y124 (CuO2 double-layers, CuO chains, low structural symmetry), it has remained unclear if the QO are specific to this particular family of cuprates. Numerous theoretical proposals have been put forward to explain the route toward QO, including materials-specific scenarios involving CuO chains and scenarios involving the quintessential CuO2 planes. Here we report the observation of QO in underdoped HgBa2CuO4+{delta} (Hg1201), a model cuprate superconductor with individual CuO2 layers, high tetragonal symmetry, and no CuO chains. This observation proves that QO are a universal property of the underdoped CuO2 planes, and it opens the door to quantitative future studies of the metallic state and of the Fermi-surface reconstruction phenomenon in this structurally simplest cuprate.

We formulate an effective low energy theory for the fermionic excitations in d-wave superconductors in the presence of periodic vortex lattices. These can be modeled by an effective free Dirac Hamiltonian with renormalized velocities and possibly a small mass term. In the presence of random nonmagnetic impurities this will result in universal (i.e. field and disorder strength independent) thermal and spin conductivities with values different from those occurring in the Meissner state.
A universal scaling relation, $rho_s propto sigma(T_c)times T_c$ has been reported by Homes $et$ $al$. (Nature (London) {bf 430}, 539 (2004)) where $rho_s$ is the superfluid density and $sigma(T)$ is the DC conductivity. The relation was shown to apply to both c-axis and in-plane dynamics for high-$T_c$ superconductors as well as to the more conventional superconductors Nb and Pb, suggesting common physics in these systems. We show quantitatively that the scaling behavior has several possible origins including, marginal Fermi-liquid behavior, Josephson coupling, dirty-limit superconductivity and unitary impurity scattering for a d-wave order parameter. However, the relation breaks down seriously in overdoped cuprates, and possibly even at lower doping.
The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth lambda was measured for an untwined single crystal of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} along the three principal crystallographic directions (a, b, and c). Both in-plane components (lambda_a and lambda_b) show an inflection point in their temperature dependence which is absent in the component along the c-direction (lambda_c). The data provide convincing evidence that the in-plane superconducting order parameter is a mixture of s+d-wave symmetry whereas it is exclusively s-wave along the c-direction. In conjunction with previous results it is concluded that coupled s+d-order parameters are universal and intrinsic to cuprate superconductors.

We identify a new kind of elementary excitations, spin-rotons, in the doped Mott insulator. They play a central role in deciding the superconducting transition temperature Tc, resulting in a simple Tc formula,Tc=Eg/6, with Eg as the characteristic energy scale of the spin rotons. We show that the degenerate S=1 and S=0 rotons can be probed by neutron scattering and Raman scattering measurements, respectively, in good agreement with the magnetic resonancelike mode and the Raman A1g mode observed in the high-Tc cuprates.
