In 2001, the discovery of circumstellar water vapour around the ageing carbon star IRC+10216 was announced. This detection challenged the current understanding of chemistry in old stars, since water vapour was predicted to be absent in carbon-rich stars. Several explanations for the occurrence of water vapour were postulated, including the vaporization of icy bodies (comets or dwarf planets) in orbit around the star, grain surface reactions, and photochemistry in the outer circumstellar envelope. However, the only water line detected so far from one carbon-rich evolved star can not discriminate, by itself, between the different mechanisms proposed. Here we report on the detection by the Herschel satellite of dozens of water vapour lines in the far-infrared and sub-millimetre spectrum of IRC+10216, including some high-excitation lines with energies corresponding to ~1000 K. The emission of these high-excitation water lines can only be explained if water vapour is present in the warm inner region of the envelope. A plausible explanation for the formation of warm water vapour appears to be the penetration of ultraviolet (UV) photons deep into a clumpy circumstellar envelope. This mechanism triggers also the formation of other molecules such as ammonia, whose observed abundances are much higher than hitherto predicted.

We report the discovery of water vapour toward the carbon star V Cygni. We have used Herschels HIFI instrument, in dual beam switch mode, to observe the 1(11) - 0(00) para-water transition at 1113.3430 GHz in the upper sideband of the Band 4b receiver. The observed spectral line profile is nearly parabolic, but with a slight asymmetry associated with blueshifted absorption, and the integrated antenna temperature is 1.69 pm 0.17 K km/s. This detection of thermal water vapour emission, carried out as part of a small survey of water in carbon-rich stars, is only the second such detection toward a carbon-rich AGB star, the first having been obtained by the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite toward IRC+10216. For an assumed ortho-to-para ratio of 3 for water, the observed line intensity implies a water outflow rate ~ (3 - 6) E-5 Earth masses per year and a water abundance relative to H2 of ~ (2-5) E-6. This value is a factor of at least 1E+4 larger than the expected photospheric abundance in a carbon-rich environment, and - as in IRC+10216 - raises the intriguing possibility that the observed water is produced by the vapourisation of orbiting comets or dwarf planets. However, observations of the single line observed to date do not permit us to place strong constraints upon the spatial distribution or origin of the observed water, but future observations of additional transitions will allow us to determine the inner radius of the H2O-emitting zone, and the H2O ortho-to-para ratio, and thereby to place important constraints upon the origin of the observed water emission.
Line spectra of 68 Taurus T Tauri stars were obtained with the Herschel-PACS (Photodetector Array Camera & Spectrometer) instrument as part of the GASPS (Gas Evolution in Protoplanetary Systems) survey of protoplanetary discs. A careful examination of the line scans centred on the [OI] 63.18 microns fine-structure line unveiled a line at 63.32 micron in some of these spectra. We identify this line with a transition of ortho-water. It is detected confidently (i.e., >3 sigma) in eight sources, i.e., 24% of the sub-sample with gas-rich discs. Several statistical tests were used to search for correlations with other disc and stellar parameters such as line fluxes of [OI] 6300 Armstrong and 63.18 microns; X-ray luminosity and continuum levels at 63 microns and 850 microns. Correlations are found between the water line fluxes and the [OI] 63.18 microns line luminosity, the dust continuum, and possibly with the stellar X-ray luminosity. This is the first time that this line of warm water vapour has been detected in protoplanetary discs. We discuss its origins, in particular whether it comes from the inner disc and/or disc surface or from shocks in outflows and jets. Our analysis favours a disc origin, with the observed water vapour line produced within 2-3AU from the central stars, where the gas temperature is of the order of 500-600 K.
Water fountains (WFs) are evolved objects showing high-velocity, collimated jets traced by water maser emission. Most of them are in the post-Asymptotic Giant Branch and they may represent one of the first manifestations of collimated mass loss in evolved stars. We present water maser, carbon monoxide, and mid-infrared spectroscopic data (obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, Herschel Space Observatory, and the Very Large Telescope, respectively) toward IRAS 15103--5754, a possible planetary nebula (PN) with WF characteristics. Carbon monoxide observations show that IRAS 15103-5754 is an evolved object, while the mid-IR spectrum displays unambiguous [NeII] emission, indicating that photoionization has started and thus, its nature as a PN is confirmed. Water maser spectra show several components spreading over a large velocity range ~75 km/s and tracing a collimated jet. This indicates that the object is a WF, the first WF known that has already entered the PN phase. However, the spatial and kinematical distribution of the maser emission in this object are significantly different from those in other WFs. Moreover, the velocity distribution of the maser emission shows a Hubble-like flow (higher velocities at larger distances from the central star), consistent with a short-lived, explosive mass-loss event. This velocity pattern is not seen in other WFs (presumably in earlier evolutionary stages). We therefore suggest that we are witnessing a fundamental change of mass-loss processes in WFs, with water masers being pumped by steady jets in post-AGB stars, but tracing explosive/ballistic events as the object enters the PN phase.
Warm absorber (WA) is an ionised gas present in the line of sight to the AGN central engine. The effect of the absorber is imprinted in the absorption lines observed in X-ray spectra of AGN. In this work, we model the WA in Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 using its recently published shape of broad band spectral energy distribution (SED) as a continuum illuminating the absorber. Using the photoionization code {sc Titan}, recently we have shown that the absorption measure distribution (AMD) found for this object can be successfully modelled as a single slab of gas in total pressure (radiation+gas) equilibrium, contrary to the usual models of constant density multiple slabs. We discuss the transmitted spectrum that would be recorded by an observer after the radiation from the nucleus passes through the WA.

CIT 6 is a carbon star in the transitional phase from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) to the protoplanetary nebulae (pPN). Observational evidences of two point sources in the optical, circumstellar arc segments in an HC$_3$N line emission, and a bipolar nebula in near-infrared provide strong support for the presence of a binary companion. Hence, CIT 6 is very attractive for studying the role of companions in the AGB-pPN transition. We have carried out high resolution $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ and $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ observations of CIT 6 with the Submillimeter Array combined with the Submillimeter Telescope (single-dish) data. The $^{12}$CO channel maps reveal a spiral-shell pattern connecting the HC$_3$N segments in a continuous form, and an asymmetric outflow corresponding to the near-infrared bipolar nebula. Rotation of the $^{12}$CO channel peak position may be related to the inner spiral winding and/or the bipolar outflow. An eccentric orbit binary is suggested for the presences of an anisotropic mass loss to the west and a double spiral pattern. The lack of interarm emission to the west may indicate a feature corresponding to the periastron passage of a highly eccentric orbit of the binary. Spatially-averaged radial and spectral profiles of $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ and $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ are compared with simple spherical radiative transfer models, suggesting a change of $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO abundance ratio from $sim30$ to $sim50$ inward in the CSE of CIT 6. The millimeter continuum emission is decomposed into extended dust thermal emission (spectral index $sim-2.4$) and compact emission from radio photosphere (spectral index $sim-2.0$).
