We investigate thermal rectification in a bulk material with a pyramid shape to elucidate shape dependence of the thermal rectification, and find that rectifying coefficient R is 1.35 for this shape, which is smaller than R=1.43 for a rectangular shape. This result is fully duplicated by our numerical calculation based on Fouriers law. We also apply this calculation to a given shape, and show a possible way to increase R depending on the shape.

The authors proposed a simple model for the lattice thermal conductivity of graphene in the framework of Klemens approximation. The Gruneisen parameters were introduced separately for the longitudinal and transverse phonon branches through averaging over phonon modes obtained from the first-principles. The calculations show that Umklapp-limited thermal conductivity of graphene grows with the increasing linear dimensions of graphene flakes and can exceed that of the basal planes of bulk graphite when the flake size is on the order of few micrometers. The obtained results are in agreement with experimental data and reflect the two-dimensional nature of phonon transport in graphene.
Quantifying the correlation between the complex structures of amorphous materials and their physical properties has been a long-standing problem in materials science. In amorphous Si, a representative covalent amorphous solid, the presence of a medium-range order (MRO) has been intensively discussed. However, the specific atomic arrangement corresponding to the MRO and its relationship with physical properties, such as thermal conductivity, remain elusive. Here, we solve this problem by combining topological data analysis, machine learning, and molecular dynamics simulations. By using persistent homology, we constructed a topological descriptor that can predict the thermal conductivity. Moreover, from the inverse analysis of the descriptor, we determined the typical ring features that correlated with both the thermal conductivity and MRO. The results provide an avenue for controlling the material characteristics through the topology of nanostructures.
In this work, a method is described to extend the iterative Hirshfeld-I method, generally used for molecules, to periodic systems. The implementation makes use of precalculated pseudo-potential based charge density distributions, and it is shown that high quality results are obtained for both molecules and solids, such as ceria, diamond, and graphite. The use of such grids makes the implementation independent of the solid state or quantum chemical code used for studying the system. The extension described here allows for easy calculation of atomic charges and charge transfer in periodic and bulk systems.
In an ensemble of non-interacting Brownian particles, a finite systematic average velocity may temporarily develop, even if it is zero initially. The effect originates from a small nonlinear correction to the dissipative force, causing the equation for the first moment of velocity to couple to moments of higher order. The effect may be relevant when a complex system dissociates in a viscous medium with conservation of momentum.

We study thermal properties of one dimensional(1D) harmonic and anharmonic lattices with mass gradient. It is found that the temperature gradient can be built up in the 1D harmonic lattice with mass gradient due to the existence of gradons. The heat flow is asymmetric in the anharmonic lattices with mass gradient. Moreover, in a certain temperature region the {it negative differential thermal resistance} is observed. Possible applications in constructing thermal rectifier and thermal transistor by using the graded material are discussed.
