The Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action has been widely studied as an interesting example of a model of k-inflation in which the sound speed of the cosmological perturbations differs from unity. In this article we consider a scalar-tensor theory in which the matter component is a field with a DBI action. Transforming to the Einstein frame, we explore the effect of the resulting coupling on the background dynamics of the fields and the first-order perturbations. We find that the coupling forces the scalar field into the minimum of its effective potential. While the additional scalar field contributes significantly to the energy density during inflation, the dynamics are determined by the DBI field, which has the interesting effect of increasing the number of efolds of inflation and decreasing the boost factor of the DBI field. Focusing on this case, we show, with the benefit of numerical examples, that the power spectrum of the primordial perturbations is determined by the behaviour of the perturbations of the modified DBI field.

The scalar-tensor Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation scenario provides a simple mechanism to reduce the large values of the boost factor associated with single field models with DBI action, whilst still being able to drive 60 efolds of inflation. Using a slow-roll approach, we obtain an analytical expression for the spectral index of the perturbations and, moreover, determine numerically the regions of the parameter space of the model capable of giving rise to a power spectrum with amplitude and spectral index within the observed bounds. We find that regions that exhibit significant DBI effects throughout the inflationary period can be discarded by virtue of a blue-tilted spectral index, however, there are a number of viable cases --- associated with a more red-tilted spectral index --- for which the boost factor is initially suppressed by the effect of the coupling between the fields, but increases later to moderate values.
Violation of parity symmetry in the gravitational sector, which manifests into unequal left and right circular polarization states of primordial gravitational waves, represents a way to test high-energy modifications to general relativity. In this paper we study inflation within recently proposed chiral scalar-tensor theories of gravity, that extend Chern-Simons gravity by including parity-violating operators containing first and second derivatives of the non-minimally coupled scalar (inflaton) field. Given the degeneracy between different parity-violating theories at the level of the power spectrum statistics, we make a detailed analysis of the parity violation on primordial tensor non-Gaussianity. We show, with an explicit computation, that no new contributions arise in the graviton bispectra if the couplings in the new operators are constant in a pure de Sitter phase. On the other hand, if the coupling functions are time-dependent during inflation, the tensor bispectra acquire non-vanishing contributions from the parity-breaking operators even in the exact de Sitter limit, with maximal signal in the squeezed and equilateral configurations. We also comment on the consistency relation of the three-point function of tensor modes in this class of models and discuss prospects of detecting parity-breaking signatures through Cosmic Microwave Background $B$-mode bispectra.
We investigate the scalar perturbation of the inflation model driven by a massive-scalar field in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. We focus on the perturbation at the attractor stage in which the first and the second slow-roll conditions are satisfied. The scalar perturbation exhibits the corrections to the chaotic inflation model in general relativity. We find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio becomes smaller than that of the usual chaotic inflation.
Spontaneous scalarization is a mechanism that endows relativistic stars and black holes with a nontrivial configuration only when their spacetime curvature exceeds some threshold. The standard way to trigger spontaneous scalarization is via a tachyonic instability at the linear level, which is eventually quenched due to the effect of non-linear terms. In this paper, we identify all of the terms in the Horndeski action that contribute to the (effective) mass term in the linearized equations and, hence, can cause or contribute to the tachyonic instability that triggers scalarization.
In this letter we investigate gauge invariant scalar fluctuations of the metric in a non-perturbative formalism for a Higgs inflationary model recently introduced in the framework of a geometrical scalar-tensor theory of gravity. In this scenario the Higgs inflaton field has its origin in the Weyl scalar field of the background geometry. We found a nearly scale invariance of the power spectrum for linear scalar fluctuations of the metric. For certain parameters of the model we obtain values for the scalar spectral index $n_s$ and the scalar to tensor ratio $r$ that fit well with the Planck 2018 results. Besides we show that in this model the trans-planckian problem can be avoided.
