The non-equilibrium state of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta and its ultrafast dynamics have been investigated by femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy well below the critical temperature. We probe optically excited quasiparticles at different electron momenta along the Fermi surface and detect metastable quasiparticles near the antinode. Their decay through e-e scattering is blocked by a phase space restricted to the nodal region. The lack of momentum dependence in the decay rates is in agreement with relaxation dominated by Cooper pair recombination in a boson bottleneck limit.

We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to characterize the dynamics of the energy gap in superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (Bi2212). Photoexcitation drives the system into a nonequilibrium pseudogap state: Near the Brillouin zone diagonal (inside the normal-state Fermi arc), the gap completely closes for a pump fluence beyond F = 15 {mu}J/cm^2; toward the Brillouin zone face (outside the Fermi arc), it remains open to at least 24 {mu}J/cm^2. This strongly anisotropic gap response may indicate multiple competing ordering tendencies in Bi2212. Despite these contrasts, the gap recovers with relatively momentum-independent dynamics at all probed momenta, which shows the persistent influence of superconductivity both inside and outside the Fermi arc.
Employing the momentum-sensitivity of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we demonstrate the analysis of ultrafast single- and many-particle dynamics in antiferromagnetic EuFe2As2. Their separation is based on a temperature-dependent difference of photo-excited hole and electron relaxation times probing the single particle band and the spin density wave gap, respectively. Reformation of the magnetic order occurs at 800 fs, which is four times slower compared to electron-phonon equilibration due to a smaller spin-dependent relaxation phase space.

Copper oxide superconductors have continually fascinated the communities of condensed matter physics and material sciences because they host the highest ambient-pressure superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and mysterious physics. Searching for the universal correlation between the superconducting state and its normal state or neighboring ground state is believed to be an effective way for finding clues to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the superconductivity. One of the common pictures for the copper oxide superconductors is that a well-behaved metallic phase will present after the superconductivity is entirely suppressed by chemical doping or application of the magnetic field. Here, we report a different observation of universal quantum transition from superconducting state to insulating-like state under pressure in the under-, optimally- and over-doped Bi2212 superconductors with two CuO2 planes in a unit cell. The same phenomenon has been also found in the Bi2201 superconductor with one CuO2 plane and the Bi2223 superconductor with three CuO2 planes in a unit cell. These results not only provide fresh information but also pose a new challenge for achieving a unified understanding on the underlying physics of the high-Tc superconductivity.
Ultrahigh resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy photons is used to study the detailed momentum dependence of the well-known nodal kink dispersion anomaly of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{delta}. We find that the kinks location transitions smoothly from a maximum binding energy of about 65 meV at the node of the d-wave superconducting gap to 55 meV roughly one-third of the way to the antinode. Meanwhile, the self-energy spectrum corresponding to the kink dramatically sharpens and intensifies beyond a critical point in momentum space. We discuss the possible bosonic spectrum in energy and momentum space that can couple to the k-space dispersion of the electronic kinks.
The Fe pnictide parent compound EuFe2As2 exhibits a strongly momentum dependent carrier dynamics around the hole pocket at the center of the Brillouin zone. The very different dynamics of electrons and holes cannot be explained solely by intraband scattering and interband contributions have to be considered. In addition, three coherently excited modes at frequencies of 5.6, 3.1 and 2.4 THz are observed. An estimate of the electron-phonon coupling parameter reveals lambda < 0.5, suggesting a limited importance of e-ph coupling to superconductivity in Fe pnictides.
