An algebraic linear ordering is a component of the initial solution of a first-order recursion scheme over the continuous categorical algebra of countable linear orderings equipped with the sum operation and the constant 1. Due to a general Mezei-Wright type result, algebraic linear orderings are exactly those isomorphic to the linear ordering of the leaves of an algebraic tree. Using Courcelles characterization of algebraic trees, we obtain the fact that a linear ordering is algebraic if and only if it can be represented as the lexicographic ordering of a deterministic context-free language. We show that, for every linear ordering of $[2]^n$, there is a large subcube on which the ordering is lexicographic. We use this to deduce that every long sequence contains a long monotone subsequence supported on an affine cube. More generally, we prove an analogous result for linear orderings of $[k]^n$. We show that, for every such ordering, there is a large subcube on which the ordering agrees with one of approximately $frac{(k-1)!}{2(ln 2)^k}$ orderings.
There is a Turing computable embedding $Phi$ of directed graphs $A$ in undirected graphs. Moreover, there is a fixed tuple of formulas that give a uniform interpretation; i.e., for all directed graphs $A$, these formulas interpret $A$ in $Phi(G)$. We show that there is no fixed tuple of $L_{omega_1,omega}$ formulas that, for all $G$, interpret the input graph $G$ in the output linear ordering $L(G)$. Harrison-Trainor and Montalban have also shown this, by a quite different proof.
Given a pseudoword over suitable pseudovarieties, we associate to it a labeled linear order determined by the factorizations of the pseudoword. We show that, in the case of the pseudovariety of aperiodic finite semigroups, the pseudoword can be recovered from the labeled linear order.

The present work determines the exact nature of {em linear time computable} notions which characterise automatic functions (those whose graphs are recognised by a finite automaton). The paper also determines which type of linear time notions permit full learnability for learning in the limit of automatic classes (families of languages which are uniformly recognised by a finite automaton). In particular it is shown that a function is automatic iff there is a one-tape Turing machine with a left end which computes the function in linear time where the input before the computation and the output after the computation both start at the left end. It is known that learners realised as automatic update functions are restrictive for learning. In the present work it is shown that one can overcome the problem by providing work tapes additional to a resource-bounded base tape while keeping the update-time to be linear in the length of the largest datum seen so far. In this model, one additional such work tape provides additional learning power over the automatic learner model and two additional work tapes give full learning power. Furthermore, one can also consider additional queues or additional stacks in place of additional work tapes and for these devices, one queue or two stacks are sufficient for full learning power while one stack is insufficient.

Linear-Rate Multi-Mode Systems is a model that can be seen both as a subclass of switched linear systems with imposed global safety constraints and as hybrid automata with no guards on transitions. We study the existence and design of a controller for this model that keeps the state of the system within a given safe set for the whole time. A sufficient and necessary condition is given for such a controller to exist as well as an algorithm that finds one in polynomial time. We further generalise the model by adding costs on modes and present an algorithm that constructs a safe controller which minimises the peak cost, the average-cost or any cost expressed as a weighted sum of these two. Finally, we present numerical simulation results based on our implementation of these algorithms.
