Numerical simulations of the onset phase of continuous wave supercontinuum generation from modulation instability show that the structure of the field as it develops can be interpreted in terms of the properties of Akhmediev Breathers. Numerical and analytical results are compared with experimental measurements of spectral broadening in photonic crystal fiber using nanosecond pulses

We demonstrate broadband supercontinuum generation in an all-normal dispersion polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber and we report the observation of a cross-phase modulation instability sideband that is generated outside of the supercontinuum bandwidth. We demonstrate this sideband is polarized on the slow axis and can be suppressed by pumping on the fibers fast axis. We theoretically confirm and model this nonlinear process using phase-matching conditions and numerical simulations, obtaining good agreement with the measured data.

We investigate in detail the qualitative similarities between the pulse localization characteristics observed using sinusoidal phase modulation during linear propagation and those seen during the evolution of Akhmediev breathers during propagation in a system governed by the nonlinear Schr{o}dinger equation. The profiles obtained at the point of maximum focusing indeed present very close temporal and spectral features. If the respective linear and nonlinear longitudinal evolutions of those profiles are similar in the vicinity of the point of maximum focusing, they may diverge significantly for longer propagation distance. Our analysis and numerical simulations are confirmed by experiments performed in optical fiber.
Numerical simulations are used to study how fiber supercontinuum generation seeded by picosecond pulses can be actively controlled through the use of input pulse modulation. By carrying out multiple simulations in the presence of noise, we show how tailored supercontinuum Spectra with increased bandwidth and improved stability can be generated using an input envelope modulation of appropriate frequency and depth. The results are discussed in terms of the non-linear propagation dynamics and pump depletion.
We present numerical results of supercontinuum (SC) generation in the mid-IR spectral region, specifically addressing the molecular fingerprint window ranging from 2.5 to 25 um. By solving the Generalized Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (GNLSE) in a chalcogenide waveguide, we demonstrate low-power SC generation beyond 10 um from a pump at 5 um. Further, we investigate the short-pulse and CW regimes, and show that a simple linear dispersion profile, applicable to a broad range of chalcogenide media, is sufficient to account for the broad SC generation, and yield rich pulse dynamics leading to the frequent occurrence of rogue wave events. Results are encouraging as they point to the feasibility of producing bright and coherent light, by means of single low-power tabletop laser pumping schemes, in a spectral region that finds applications in such diverse areas as molecular spectroscopy, metrology and tomography, among others, and that is not easily addressable with other light sources
We report an exact link between Zakharov-Gelash super-regular (SR) breathers (formed by a pair of quasi-Akhmediev breathers) with interesting different nonlinear propagation characteristics and modulation instability (MI). This shows that the absolute difference of group velocities of SR breathers coincides exactly with the linear MI growth rate. This link holds for a series of nonlinear Schr{o}dinger equations with infinite-order terms. For the particular case of SR breathers with opposite group velocities, the growth rate of SR breathers is consistent with that of each quasi-Akhmediev breather along the propagation direction. Numerical simulations reveal the robustness of different SR breathers generated from various non-ideal single and multiple initial excitations. Our results provide insight into the MI nature described by SR breathers and could be helpful for controllable SR breather excitations in related nonlinear systems.
