Neutron powder diffraction measurements have been performed on Ce_xNd_{1-x}B_6 (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8) solid solutions to determine the type of magnetic order occurring in these compounds as a result of the interplay between magnetic dipole exchange and antiferroquadrupolar interactions. In the Ce-rich range, the sequence of two magnetic phases, with an incommensurate order [k = (1/4 -delta, 1/4 -delta, 1/2)] forming below T N followed by a lock-in--type transition at lower temperature, is quite similar to that reported earlier for Ce_xPr_{1-x} B_6. For x = 0.5, on the other hand, the same antiferromagnetic order as in pure NdB6 first occurs at TN, then coexists with an incommensurate component below the lower transition temperature. These results are in good agreement with previous resistivity measurements and support the idea that Ce and Nd magnetic moments in this system can be relatively decoupled.

The role of slight changes of the chemical composition on antiferromagnetic ordering of Cr in rare-earth orthochoromites was investigated on a series of ceramic solid-solutions Ce$_{1-x}$Eu${_x}$O$_3$ where x varied from 0 to 1. Gradual replacement of Ce with Eu reduces the cell volume and acts equivalently to applying external pressure. Full replacement of Ce by Eu, on the other hand, reduces the N{e}el temperature from 260 K for CeCrO$_3$ to 178 K for EuCrO$_3$ as established by magnetization, heat capacity and neutron powder diffraction measurements. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements on Ce$_{1-x}$Eu${_x}$O$_3$ and neutron powder diffraction studies on CeCrO$_3$ enable to correlate the magnetic properties of the Cr magnetic subsystem with the size of the lattice and minute changes of the bonding and torsion angles within and between the CrO$_6$ octahedra. We find that the sizes and the shapes of the CrO$6$ octahedra remain essentially unchanged as the size of the rare-earth cations is reduced whereas decreasing Cr - O - Cr bonding angles and increasing inclination of neighboring octahedra enable to compensate for the decreasing lattice size.
Superconductivity, magnetic order, and quadrupolar order have been investigated in the filled skutterudite system Pr$_{1-x}$Nd$_{x}$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$ as a function of composition $x$ in magnetic fields up to 9 tesla and at temperatures between 50 mK and 10 K. Electrical resistivity measurements indicate that the high field ordered phase (HFOP), which has been identified with antiferroquadruoplar order, persists to $x$ $sim$ 0.5. The superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ of PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is depressed linearly with Nd concentration to $x$ $sim$ 0.55, whereas the Curie temperature $T_{FM}$ of NdOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is depressed linearly with Pr composition to ($1-x$) $sim$ 0.45. In the superconducting region, the upper critical field $H_{c2}(x,0)$ is depressed quadratically with $x$ in the range 0 $<$ $x$ $lesssim$ 0.3, exhibits a kink at $x$ $approx$ 0.3, and then decreases linearly with $x$ in the range 0.3 $lesssim$ $x$ $lesssim$ 0.6. The behavior of $H_{c2}(x,0)$ appears to be due to pair breaking caused by the applied magnetic field and the exhange field associated with the polarization of the Nd magnetic moments, in the superconducting state. From magnetic susceptibility measurements, the correlations between the Nd moments in the superconducting state appear to change from ferromagnetic in the range 0.3 $lesssim$ $x$ $lesssim$ 0.6 to antiferromagnetic in the range 0 $<$ $x$ $lesssim$ 0.3. Specific heat measurements on a sample with $x$ $=$ 0.45 indicate that magnetic order occurs in the superconducting state, as is also inferred from the depression of $H_{c2}(x,0)$ with $x$.
The optical conductivity $sigma_{1}(omega)$ of Eu$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$B$_{6}$ has been obtained from reflectivity and ellipsometry measurements for series of compositions, $0leq xleq 1$. The interband part of $sigma_{1}(omega) $ shifts continuously to higher frequency as Ca-content $x$ increases. Also the intraband spectral weight of $sigma_{1}(omega)$ decreases rapidly and essentially vanishes for $xgeq x_{c}=0.35$. These results show that the valence band and the conduction band of Eu$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$B$_{6}$ move away from each other such that their band overlap decreases with increasing Ca-substitution. As a result, the electronic state evolves from the semimetallic structure of EuB$_{6}$ to the insulating CaB$_{6}$ where the two bands are separated to open a finite gap ($simeq 0.25$ eV) at the X-point of the Brillouin zone.
Magnetic ordering phenomena in CexPr1-xB6 solid solutions have been studied using both powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction. A variety of magnetic structures are observed depending on temperature and Ce concentration. Over a broad composition range (x $le$ 0.7), Pr-Pr interactions play a dominant role, giving rise to incommensurate structures with wave vectors of the form k{IC1}=(1/4-delta, 1/4, 1/2) or k{IC2}=(1/4-delta, 1/4-delta, 1/2). The crossover to a CeB6-like regime takes place near x = 0.7-0.8. For the latter composition, the antiferroquadrupolar phase transition observed in transport measurements precedes the onset, at lower temperature, of a commensurate magnetic order similar to that existing in CeB6. However, unlike in the pure compound, an incommensurate magnetic order is formed at even higher temperature and persists in the antiferroquadrupolar phase down to the lock-in transition. These results are shown to reflect the interplay between various type of dipole exchange and higher multipole interactions in this series of compounds.
The dynamic magnetic properties of the Kondo-insulator state in CeFe2Al10 (spin gap, resonance mode) have been investigated using polarized neutrons on a single crystal of pure CeFe2Al10. The results indicate that the magnetic excitations are polarized mainly along the orthorhombic a axis and their dispersion along the orthorhombic c direction could be determined. Polycrystalline samples of Nd- and Rh-doped CeFe2Al0 were also studied by the time-of-flight technique, with the aim of finding out how the low-energy magnetic excitation spectra change upon isoelectronic substitution of the rare-earth (Nd) on the magnetic Ce site or electron doping (Rh) on the transition-element Fe sublattice. The introduction of magnetic Nd impurities strongly modifies the spin gap in the Ce dynamic magnetic response and causes the appearance of a quasielastic signal. The crystal-field excitations of Nd, studied in both LaFe2Al10 and CeFe2Al10, also reveal a significant influence of f-electron hybridization (largest in the case of Ce) on the crystal-field potential. As a function of the Rh concentration, a gradual change is observed from a Kondo-insulator to a metallic Kondo-lattice response, likely reflecting the decrease in the hybridization energy.
