We compute instantonic effects in globally consistent T^6/Z2xZ2 orientifold models with discrete torsion and magnetised D-branes. We consider fractional branes and instantons wrapping the same rigid cycles. We clarify and analyse in detail the low-energy effective action on D-branes in these models. We provide explicit examples where instantons induce linear terms in the charged fields, or non-perturbative mass terms are generated. We also find examples where the gauge theory on fractional branes has conformal symmetry at one-loop, broken by instantonic mass terms at a hierarchically small energy scale.

We consider systems of magnetized D9 branes on orbifolds supporting N=1 gauge theories. In such realizations, the matter multiplets arise from twisted strings connecting different stacks of branes. The introduction of Euclidean 5-branes wrapped on the six-dimensional compact space leads to instanton effects. We examine the interplay between the annuli diagrams with an E5 boundary and the holomorphicity properties of the effective low-energy supergravity action which describes the system, including its instanton corrections. Mostly based on arXiv:0709.0245.
We discuss a string model where a conformal four-dimensional N=2 gauge theory receives corrections to its gauge kinetic functions from stringy instantons. These contributions are explicitly evaluated by exploiting the localization properties of the integral over the stringy instanton moduli space. The model we consider corresponds to a setup with D7/D3-branes in type I theory compactified on T4/Z2 x T2, and possesses a perturbatively computable heterotic dual. In the heteoric side the corrections to the quadratic gauge couplings are provided by a 1-loop threshold computation and, under the duality map, match precisely the first few stringy instanton effects in the type I setup. This agreement represents a very non-trivial test of our approach to the exotic instanton calculus.

String instanton effects in Higgs physics are discussed through a type IIA model based on T^{6}/(Z^{2}times Z^{2}) orentifold compactifaction. By inclusion of rigid E2-branes, the model exhibits a MSSM-like spectrum, as well as extra mu and quartic Higgs couplings. These extra couplings are induced via E2 instantons non-perturbatively. Setting the string scale at 10^{18} GeV, one gets interesting TeV Higgs physics. In particlular, the tree-level Higgs mass can be uplifted substantially.
In this work we study type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications in the presence of space-time filling D7-branes and O7-planes. In particular, we conclude that $alpha^2 g_s$-corrections to their DBI actions lead to a modification of the four-dimensional $mathcal{N}=1$ Kahler potential and coordinates. We focus on the one-modulus case of the geometric background i.e. $h^{1,1}=1$ where we find that the $alpha^2 g_s$-correction is of topological nature. It depends on the first Chern form of the four-cycle of the Calabi-Yau orientifold which is wrapped by the D7-branes and O7-plane. This is in agreement with our previous F-theory analysis and provides further evidence for a potential breaking of the no-scale structure at order $alpha^2 g_s$. Corrected background solutions for the dilaton, the warp-factor as well as the internal space metric are derived. Additionally, we briefly discuss $alpha$-corrections from other D$p$-branes.

It is known that when there are several D-branes, their space-time coordinates in general become noncommutative. From the point of view of noncommutative geometry, it reflects noncommutativity of the world volume of the D-branes. On the other hand, as we showed in the previous work, in the presence of the constant antisymmetric tensor field the momentum operators of the D-branes have noncommutative structure. In the present paper, we investigate a relation between these noncommutativities and the description of D-branes in terms of the noncommutative Yang-Mills theory recently proposed by Seiberg and Witten. It is shown that the noncommutativity of the Yang-Mills theory, which implies that of the world volume coordinates, originates from both noncommutativities of the transverse coordinates and momenta from the viewpoint of the lower-dimensional D-branes. Moreover, we show that this noncommutativity is transformed by coordinate transformations on the world volume and thereby can be chosen in an arbitrary fixed value. We also make a brief comment on a relation between this fact and a hidden symmetry of the IIB matrix models.
