We report multi-frequency circular polarization measurements for the four extragalactic radio sources 0056-00, 0716+71, 3C138 and 3C161 taken at the Effelsberg 100-m radiotelescope. The data reduction is based on a new calibration procedure that allows the contemporary measurement of the four Stokes parameters at different frequencies with single-dish radiotelescopes. We are in the process of framing the observed full Stokes spectra within a theoretical model that explains that the level of measured circular polarization as Faraday conversion.

Expanding on our prior efforts to search for Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) using the linear optical polarimetry of extragalactic objects, we propose a new method that combines linear and circular polarization measurements. While existing work has focused on the tendency of LIV to reduce the linear polarization degree, this new method additionally takes into account the coupling between photon helicities induced by some models. This coupling can generate circular polarization as light propagates, even if there is no circular polarization at the source. Combining significant detections of linear polarization of light from extragalactic objects with the absence of the detection of circular polarization in most measurements results in significantly tighter constraints regarding LIV. The analysis was carried out in the framework of the Standard-Model Extension (SME), an effective field theory framework to describe the low-energy effects of an underlying fundamental quantum gravity theory. We evaluate the performance of our method by deriving constraints on the mass dimension $d=4$ CPT-even SME coefficients from a small set of archival circular and linear optical polarimetry constraints and compare them to similar constraints derived in previous works with far larger sample sizes and based on linear polarimetry only. The new method yielded constraints that are an order of magnitude tighter even for our modest sample size of 21 objects. Based on the demonstrated gain in constraining power from scarce circular data, we advocate for the need for future extragalactic circular polarization surveys.
We present high sensitivity polarimetric observations in 6 bands covering the 5.5-38 GHz range of a complete sample of 53 compact extragalactic radio sources brighter than 200 mJy at 20 GHz. The observations, carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), achieved a 91% detection rate (at 5 sigma). Within this frequency range the spectra of about 95% of sources are well fitted by double power laws, both in total intensity and in polarisation, but the spectral shapes are generally different in the two cases. Most sources were classified as either steep- or peaked-spectrum but less than 50% have the same classification in total and in polarised intensity. No significant trends of the polarisation degree with flux density or with frequency were found. The mean variability index in total intensity of steep-spectrum sources increases with frequency for a 4-5 year lag, while no significant trend shows up for the other sources and for the 8 year lag. In polarisation, the variability index, that could be computed only for the 8 year lag, is substantially higher than in total intensity and has no significant frequency dependence.
We report quasi-simultaneous GMRT observations of seven extragalactic radio sources at 150, 325, 610 and 1400 MHz, in an attempt to accurately define their radio continuum spectra, particularly at frequencies below the observed spectral turnover. We had previously identified these sources as candidates for a sharply inverted integrated radio spectrum whose slope is close to, or even exceeds $alpha_c$ = +2.5, the theoretical limit due to synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) in a source of incoherent synchrotron radiation arising from relativistic particles with the canonical (i.e., power-law) energy distribution. We find that four out of the seven candidates have an inverted radio spectrum with a slope close to or exceeding +2.0, while the critical spectral slope $alpha_c$ is exceeded in at least one case. These sources, together with another one or two reported in very recent literature, may well be the archetypes of an extremely rare class, from the standpoint of violation of the SSA limit in compact extragalactic radio sources. However, the alternative possibility that free-free absorption is responsible for their ultra-sharp spectral turnover cannot yet be discounted.
We present the discovery of another Odd Radio Circle (ORC) with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) at 944 MHz. The observed radio ring, ORC J0102-2450, has a diameter of ~70 arcsec or 300 kpc, if associated with the central elliptical galaxy DES J010224.33-245039.5 (z ~ 0.27). Considering the overall radio morphology (circular ring and core) and lack of ring emission at non-radio wavelengths, we investigate if ORC J0102-2450 could be the relic lobe of a giant radio galaxy seen end-on or the result of a giant blast wave. We also explore possible interaction scenarios, for example, with the companion galaxy, DES J010226.15-245104.9, located in or projected onto the south-eastern part of the ring. We encourage the search for further ORCs in radio surveys to study their properties and origin.
