A new three dimensional model of the FEL is presented. A system of scaled, coupled Maxwell Lorentz equations are derived in the paraxial limit. A minimal number of limiting assumptions are made and the equations are not averaged in the longitudinal direction of common radiation/ electron beam propagation, allowing the effects of coherent spontaneous emission and non-localised electron propagation to be modelled. The equations are solved numerically using a parallel Fourier split-step method.

A model is presented which demonstrates that the attosecond pulse structure of a High Harmonic Generation (HHG) seed may be retained through to saturation in an FEL amplifier. At wavelengths of ~12nm a train of attosecond pulses of widths ~300 attoseconds with peak powers in excess of 1 GW are predicted from full 3D simulation. Methods for improving these results are discussed.
The statistical features of the radiation emitted by Free-Electron Lasers (FELs), either by Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE-FELs) or by seeded emission (seeded-FELs), are attracting increasing attention because of the use of such light in probing high energy states of matter and their dynamics. While the experimental studies conducted so far have mainly concentrated on correlation functions, here we shift the focus towards reconstructing the distribution of the occupation numbers of the radiation energy states. In order to avoid the various drawbacks related to photon counting techniques when large numbers of photons are involved, we propose a Maximum Likelihood reconstruction of the diagonal elements of the FEL radiation states in the energy eigenbasis based on the statistics of no-click events. The ultimate purpose of such a novel approach to FEL radiation statistics is the experimental confirmation that SASE-FEL radiation exhibits thermal occupation number statistics, while seeded-FEL light Poissonian statistics typical of coherent states and thus of laser light. In this framework, it is interesting to note that the outcome of this work can be extended to any process of harmonic generation from a coherent light pulse, unlocking the gate to the study of the degree to which the original distinctive quantum features deduced from the statistical photon number fluctuations are preserved in non-linear optical processes.
We report a realization of three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic void space. Despite occupying a finite volume of space, such a medium is optically equivalent to an infinitesimal point where electromagnetic waves experience no phase accumulation. The 3D void space is realized by constructing all-dielectric 3D photonic crystals such that the effective permittivity and permeability vanish simultaneously, forming a six-fold Dirac-like point with Dirac-like linear dispersions at the center of the Brillouin Zone. We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that such a 3D void space exhibits unique properties and rich functionalities absent in any other electromagnetic media, such as boundary-control transmission switching and 3D perfect wave-steering mechanisms. Especially, contrary to the photonic doping effect in its two-dimensional counterpart, the 3D void space exhibits an amazing property of impurity-immunity. Our work paves a road towards the realization of 3D void space where electromagnetic waves can be manipulated in unprecedented ways.
Three-dimensional numerical model is developed and applied for studies of physical processes in Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source. The model includes separate modules that simulate the electron and ion dynamics in the source plasma in an iterative way. The electron heating by microwaves is simulated by using results of modelling the microwave propagation in the plasma by the COMSOL Multiphysics software. Extracted ion currents and other parameters of the source are obtained for different gas flows into the source. It is observed that the currents are strongly influenced by ion transport in transversal direction induced by the plasma potential gradients. Impact of some special techniques on the source performance is investigated. Magnetic field scaling is shown to reduce the ion losses during their movement toward the extraction aperture, as well as use of the aluminum chamber walls and mixing of the working gas with helium.

The three-dimensional Monte Carlo photoionization code Mocassin has been applied to construct a realistic model of the planetary nebula NGC 3918. Three different geometric models were tried. The effects of the interaction of the diffuse fields coming from two adjacent regions of different densities were investigated. These are found to be non-negligible, even for the relatively uncomplicated case of a biconical geometry. We found that the ionization structure of low ionization species near the boundaries is particularly affected. It is found that all three models provided acceptable matches to the integrated nebular optical and ultraviolet spectrum. Large discrepancies were found between all of the model predictions of infrared fine-structure line fluxes and ISO SWS measurements. This was found to be largely due to an offset of ~14 arcsec from the centre of the nebula that affected all of the ISO observations of NGC 3918. For each model, we also produced projected emission-line maps and position-velocity diagrams from synthetic long-slit spectra, which could be compared to recent HST images and ground-based long-slit echelle spectra. This comparison showed that spindle-like model B provided the best match to the observations. We have therefore shown that although the integrated emission line spectrum of NGC 3918 can be reproduced by all three of the three-dimensional models investigated in this work, the capability of creating projected emission-line maps and position-velocity diagrams from synthetic long-slit spectra was crucial in allowing us to constrain the structure of this object.
