We present an efficient diagrammatic method to describe nonlocal correlation effects in lattice fermion Hubbard-like models, which is based on a change of variables in the Grassmann path integrals. The new fermions are dual to the original ones and correspond to weakly interacting quasiparticles in the case of strong local correlations in the Hubbard model. The method starts with dynamical mean-field theory as a zeroth-order approximation and includes non-local effects in a perturbative way. In contrast to cluster approaches, this method utilizes an exact transition to a dual set of variables. It therefore becomes possible to treat the irreducible vertices of an effective {it single-impurity} problem as small parameters. This provides a very efficient interpolation between band-like weak-coupling and atomic limits. The method is illustrated on the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The antiferromagnetic pseudogap, Fermi-arc formations, and non-Fermi-liquid effects due to the van Hove singularity are correctly reproduced by the lowest-order diagrams. Extremum properties of the dual fermion approach are discussed in terms of the Feynman variational principle.

We apply the recently developed dual fermion algorithm for disordered interacting systems to the Anderson-Hubbard model. This algorithm is compared with dynamical cluster approximation calculations for a one-dimensional system to establish the quality of the approximation in comparison with an established cluster method. We continue with a three-dimensional (3d) system and look at the antiferromagnetic, Mott and Anderson localization transitions. The dual fermion approach leads to quantitative as well as qualitative improvement of the dynamical mean-field results and it allows one to calculate the hysteresis in the double occupancy in 3d taking into account nonlocal correlations.
As a measure to ascertain whether a system is metallic or insulating, localization length $lambda_N$, which represents the spread of electron distribution, can be a useful quantity, especially for approaching a metal-insulator transition from the insulator side. We try to calculate $lambda_N$ using a variational Monte Carlo method for normal (paramagnetic), superconducting and antiferromagnetic states in the square-lattice Hubbard model. It is found that the behavior of $lambda_N$ is consistent with what is expected from other quantities, and gives information complementary to another measure, the Drude weight.
One of the distinctive features of hole-doped cuprate superconductors is the onset of a `pseudogap below a temperature $T^*$. Recent experiments suggest that there may be a connection between the existence of the pseudogap and the topology of the Fermi surface. Here, we address this issue by studying the two-dimensional Hubbard model with two distinct numerical methods. We find that the pseudogap only exists when the Fermi surface is hole-like and that, for a broad range of parameters, its opening is concomitant with a Fermi surface topology change from electron- to hole-like. We identify a common link between these observations: the pole-like feature of the electronic self-energy associated with the formation of the pseudogap is found to also control the degree of particle-hole asymmetry, and hence the Fermi surface topology transition. We interpret our results in the framework of an SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating antiferromagnetism. We show that a mean-field treatment of this theory in a metallic state with U(1) topological order provides an explanation of this pole-like feature, and a good description of our numerical results. We discuss the relevance of our results to experiments on cuprates.
We report large scale determinant Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the effective bandwidth, momentum distribution, and magnetic correlations of the square lattice fermion Hubbard Hamiltonian at half-filling. The sharp Fermi surface of the non-interacting limit is significantly broadened by the electronic correlations, but retains signatures of the approach to the edges of the first Brillouin zone as the density increases. Finite size scaling of simulations on large lattices allows us to extract the interaction dependence of the antiferromagnetic order parameter, exhibiting its evolution from weak coupling to the strong coupling Heisenberg limit. Our lattices provide improved resolution of the Greens function in momentum space, allowing a more quantitative comparison with time-of-flight optical lattice experiments.
The repulsive Fermi Hubbard model on the square lattice has a rich phase diagram near half-filling (corresponding to the particle density per lattice site $n=1$): for $n=1$ the ground state is an antiferromagnetic insulator, at $0.6 < n lesssim 0.8$, it is a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superfluid (at least for moderately strong interactions $U lesssim 4t$ in terms of the hopping $t$), and the region $1-n ll 1$ is most likely subject to phase separation. Much of this physics is preempted at finite temperatures and to an extent driven by strong magnetic fluctuations, their quantitative characteristics and how they change with the doping level being much less understood. Experiments on ultra-cold atoms have recently gained access to this interesting fluctuation regime, which is now under extensive investigation. In this work we employ a self-consistent skeleton diagrammatic approach to quantify the characteristic temperature scale $T_{M}(n)$ for the onset of magnetic fluctuations with a large correlation length and identify their nature. Our results suggest that the strongest fluctuations---and hence highest $T_{M}$ and easiest experimental access to this regime---are observed at $U/t approx 4-6$.
