In university programs and curricula, in general we react to the need to meet market needs. We respond to market stimulus, or at least try to do so. Consider now an inverted view. Consider our data and perspectives in university programs as reflecting and indeed presaging economic trends. In this article I pursue this line of thinking. I show how various past events fit very well into this new view. I provide explanation for why some technology trends happened as they did, and why some current developments are important now.

The Grateful Dead were an American band that was born out of the San Francisco, California psychedelic movement of the 1960s. The band played music together from 1965 to 1995 and is well known for concert performances containing extended improvisations and long and unique set lists. This article presents a comparative analysis between 1,590 of the Grateful Deads concert set lists from 1972 to 1995 and 2,616,990 last.fm Grateful Dead listening events from August 2005 to October 2007. While there is a strong correlation between how songs were played in concert and how they are listened to by last.fm members, the outlying songs in this trend identify interesting aspects of the band and their fans 10 years after the bands dissolution.

The type-II see-saw mechanism based on the annexation of the Standard Model by weak gauge triplet scalar field proffers a natural explanation for the very minuteness of neutrino masses. Noting that the phenomenology for the non-degenerate triplet Higgs spectrum is substantially contrasting than that for the degenerate one, we perform a comprehensive study for an extensive model parameter space parametrised by the triplet scalar vacuum expectation value (VEV), the mass-splitting between the triplet-like doubly and singly charged scalars and the mass of the doubly charged scalar. Considering all Drell-Yan production mechanisms for the triplet-like scalars and taking into account the all-encompassing complexity of their decays, we derive the most stringent 95% CL lower limits on the mass of the doubly charged scalar for a vast model parameter space by implementing already existing direct collider searches by CMS and ATLAS. These estimated limits are beyond those from the existing LHC searches by approximately 50-230 GeV. However, we also find that a specific region of the parameter space is not constrained by the LHC searches. Then, we forecast future limits by extending an ATLAS search at high-luminosity, and we propose a search strategy that yields improved limits for a part of the parameter space.
Nanoscale semiconductor technology has been a key enabler of the computing revolution. It has done so via advances in new materials and manufacturing processes that resulted in the size of the basic building block of computing systems - the logic switch and memory devices - being reduced into the nanoscale regime. Nanotechnology has provided increased computing functionality per unit volume, energy, and cost. In order for computing systems to continue to deliver substantial benefits for the foreseeable future to society at large, it is critical that the very notion of computing be examined in the light of nanoscale realities. In particular, one needs to ask what it means to compute when the very building block - the logic switch - no longer exhibits the level of determinism required by the von Neumann architecture. There needs to be a sustained and heavy investment in a nation-wide Vertically Integrated Semiconductor Ecosystem (VISE). VISE is a program in which research and development is conducted seamlessly across the entire compute stack - from applications, systems and algorithms, architectures, circuits and nanodevices, and materials. A nation-wide VISE provides clear strategic advantages in ensuring the USs global superiority in semiconductors. First, a VISE provides the highest quality seed-corn for nurturing transformative ideas that are critically needed today in order for nanotechnology-inspired computing to flourish. It does so by dramatically opening up new areas of semiconductor research that are inspired and driven by new application needs. Second, a VISE creates a very high barrier to entry from foreign competitors because it is extremely hard to establish, and even harder to duplicate.
Specialized computational chemistry packages have permanently reshaped the landscape of chemical and materials science by providing tools to support and guide experimental efforts and for the prediction of atomistic and electronic properties. In this regard, electronic structure packages have played a special role by using first-principledriven methodologies to model complex chemical and materials processes. Over the last few decades, the rapid development of computing technologies and the tremendous increase in computational power have offered a unique chance to study complex transformations using sophisticated and predictive many-body techniques that describe correlated behavior of electrons in molecular and condensed phase systems at different levels of theory. In enabling these simulations, novel parallel algorithms have been able to take advantage of computational resources to address the polynomial scaling of electronic structure methods. In this paper, we briefly review the NWChem computational chemistry suite, including its history, design principles, parallel tools, current capabilities, outreach and outlook.
