We investigate the effect of the electric-charge neutrality in $beta$ equilibrium on the chiral phase transition by solving the chiral and diquark condensates in the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We demonstrate that the electric-charge neutrality plays a similar role as the repulsive vector interaction; they both weaken the first-order chiral phase transition in the high-density and low-temperature region. The first-order chiral phase transition is not affected, however, at finite temperatures where the diquark condensate melts. In this way the chiral phase transition could be second-order at intermediate temperatures if the diquark effects overwhelm the chiral dynamics, while the first-order transition may survive at lower and higher temperatures. The number of the critical points appearing on the phase diagram can vary from zero to three, which depends on the relative strength of the chiral and diquark couplings. We systematically study the possibility of the phase structure with multiple QCD critical points and evaluate the Meissner screening mass to confirm that our conclusion is not overturned by chromomagnetic instability.

In dense quark matter, the response of the color superconducting gaps to a small variation, $deltamu$, in the chemical potential of the strange quark was studied. The approximation of three massless flavors of quarks and a general ansatz for the color flavor structure of the gap matrix was used. The general pole structure of the quasi-particle propagator in this ansatz is presented. The gap equation was solved using both an NJL interaction model and perturbative single gluon exchange at moderate densities and results are presented for varying values of $deltamu$. Quantitative and qualitative differences in the dependence of the gaps on $deltamu$ were found.
Net-proton number fluctuations can be measured experimentally and hence provide a source of important information about the matter created during relativistic heavy ion collisions. Particularly, they may give us clues about the conjectured QCD critical point. In this work the beam-energy dependence of ratios of the first four cumulants of the net-proton number is discussed. These quantities are calculated using a phenomenologically motivated model in which critical mode fluctuations couple to protons and anti-protons. Our model qualitatively captures both the monotonic behavior of the lowest-order ratio as well as the non-monotonic behavior of higher-order ratios, as seen in the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration. We also discuss the dependence of our results on the coupling strength and the location of the critical point.
The net-baryon number fluctuations for three-flavor quark matter are computed within the Polyakov extended Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. Two models with vanishing and nonvanishing vector interactions are considered. While the former predicts a critical end point (CEP) in the phase diagram, the latter predicts no CEP. We show that the nonmonotonic behavior of the susceptibilities in the phase diagram is still present even in the absence of a CEP. Therefore, from the nonmonotonic behavior of the susceptibilities solely, one cannot assume the existence of a CEP. We analyze other possible properties that may distinguish the two scenarios, and determine the behavior of the net-baryon number fluctuations and the velocity of sound along several isentropes, with moderate and small values. It is shown that the value of the susceptibilities ratios and the velocity of sound at two or three isentropic lines could possibly allow to distinguish both scenarios, a phase diagram with or without CEP. Smoother behaviors of these quantities may indicate the nonexistence of a CEP. We also discuss the critical behavior of the strange sector.

We propose to study the superconducting pairing of quarks with the formation of the diquarks as well as the quark-antiquark pairing in QCD by means of the functional integral technique. The dynamical equations for the superconducting order parameters are the nonlinear integral equations for the composite quantum fields describing the quark-quark or quark-antiquark systems. These composite fields are the bi-local fields if the pairing is generated by the gluon exchange while for the instanton induced pairing interactions they are the local ones. The expressions of the free energy densities are derived. The binding of three quarks is also discussed.
