We investigate the effect of the magnetic anisotropy ($K_z$) on the static and dynamic properties of magnetic vortices in small disks. Our micromagnetic calculations reveal that for a range of $K_z$ there is an enlargement of the vortex core. We analyze the influence of $K_z$ on the dynamics of the vortex core magnetization reversal under the excitation of a pulsed field. The presence of $K_z$, which leads to better resolved vortex structures, allows us to discuss in more details the role played by the in-plane and perpendicular components of the gyrotropic field during the vortex-antivortex nucleation and annihilation.
Recently we have demonstrated the presence of spin-orbit toque in FeMn/Pt multilayers which, in combination with the anisotropy field, is able to rotate its magnetization consecutively from 0o to 360o without any external field. Here, we report on an investigation of static and dynamic magnetic properties of FeMn/Pt multilayers using combined techniques of magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance, inverse spin Hall effect and spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements. The FeMn/Pt multilayer was found to exhibit ferromagnetic properties, and its temperature dependence of saturation magnetization can be fitted well using a phenomenological model by including a finite distribution in Curie temperature due to subtle thickness variations across the multilayer samples. The non-uniformity in static magnetic properties is also manifested in the ferromagnetic resonance spectra, which typically exhibit a broad resonance peak. A damping parameter of around 0.106 is derived from the frequency dependence of ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, which is comparable to the reported values for other types of Pt-based multilayers. Clear inverse spin Hall signals and spin Hall magnetoresistance have been observed in all samples below the Curie temperature, which corroborate the strong spin-orbit torque effect observed previously.
In this work we address the interplay between two phenomena which are signatures of the out-of-equilibrium state in phase separated manganites: irreversibility against thermal cycling and aging/rejuvenation process. The sample investigated is La0.5Ca0.5MnO3, a prototypical manganite exhibiting phase separation. Two regimes for isothermal relaxation were observed according to the temperature range: for T > 100 K, aging/rejuvenation effects are observed, while for T < 100 K an irreversible aging was found. Our results show that thermal cycles act as a tool to unveil the dynamical behavior of the phase separated state in manganites, revealing the close interplay between static and dynamic properties of phase separated manganites.
Model of quantum depinning of magnetic vortex cores from line defects in a disk geometry and under the application of an in-plane magnetic field has been developed within the framework of the Caldeira-Leggett theory. The corresponding instanton solutions are computed for several values of the magnetic field. Expressions for the crossover temperature Tc and for the depinning rate Gamma(T) are obtained. Fitting of the theory parameters to experimental data is also presented.
Single crystals of CrSbSe$_3$, a structurally pseudo-one-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor, were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by x-ray diffraction, anisotropic, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, temperature-dependent resistivity and optical absorption measurements. A band gap of 0.7 eV was determined from both resistivity and optical measurements. At high temperatures, CrSbSe$_3$ is paramagnetic and isotropic with a Curie-Weiss temperature of $sim$145 K and an effective moment of $sim$4.1 $mu_B$/Cr. A ferromagnetic transition occurs at $T_c$ = 71 K. The $a$-axis, perpendicular to the chains in the structure, is the magnetic easy axis, while the chain axis direction, along $b$, is the hard axis. Magnetic isotherms measured around $T_c$ do not follow the behavior predicted by simple mean field critical exponents for a second order phase transition. A tentative set of critical exponents is estimated based on a modified Arrott plot analysis, giving $betasim$0.25, $gammasim$1.38 and $deltasim$6.6.
The algorithm for the DPD fluid, the dynamics of which is conceptually a combination of molecular dynamics, Brownian dynamics and lattice gas automata, is designed for simulating rheological properties of complex fluids on hydrodynamic time scales. This paper calculates the equilibrium and transport properties (viscosity, self-diffusion) of the thermostated DPD fluid explicitly in terms of the system parameters. It is demonstrated that temperature gradients cannot exist, and that there is therefore no heat conductivity. Starting from the N-particle Fokker-Planck, or Kramers equation, we prove an H-theorem for the free energy, obtain hydrodynamic equations, and derive a non-linear kinetic equation (the Fokker-Planck-Boltzmann equation) for the single particle distribution function. This kinetic equation is solved by the Chapman-Enskog method. The analytic results are compared with numerical simulations.
