Floods, tides and tsunamis are turbulent, yet conventional models are based upon depth averaging inviscid irrotational flow equations. We propose to change the base of such modelling to the Smagorinksi large eddy closure for turbulence in order to appropriately match the underlying fluid dynamics. Our approach allows for large changes in fluid depth to cater for extreme inundations. The key to the analysis underlying the approach is to choose surface and bed boundary conditions that accommodate a constant turbulent shear as a nearly neutral mode. Analysis supported by slow manifold theory then constructs a model for the coupled dynamics of the fluid depth and the mean turbulent lateral velocity. The model resolves the internal turbulent shear in the flow and thus may be used in further work to rationally predict erosion and transport in turbulent floods.

Consider the dynamics of turbulent flow in rivers, estuaries and floods. Based on the widely used k-epsilon model for turbulence, we use the techniques of centre manifold theory to derive dynamical models for the evolution of the water depth and of vertically averaged flow velocity and turbulent parameters. This new model for the shallow water dynamics of turbulent flow: resolves the vertical structure of the flow and the turbulence; includes interaction between turbulence and long waves; and gives a rational alternative to classical models for turbulent environmental flows.

A shear-improved Smagorinsky model is introduced based on recent results concerning shear effects in wall-bounded turbulence by Toschi et al. (2000). The Smagorinsky eddy-viscosity is modified subtracting the magnitude of the mean shear from the magnitude of the instantaneous resolved strain-rate tensor. This subgrid-scale model is tested in large-eddy simulations of plane-channel flows at two different Reynolds numbers. First comparisons with the dynamic Smagorinsky model and direct numerical simulations, including mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stress profiles, are shown to be extremely satisfactory. The proposed model, in addition of being physically sound, has a low computational cost and possesses a high potentiality of generalization to more complex non-homogeneous turbulent flows.
We consider the question of fundamental limitations on the performance of eddy-viscosity closure models for turbulent flows, focusing on the Leith model for 2D Large-Eddy Simulation. Optimal eddy viscosities depending on the magnitude of the vorticity gradient are determined subject to minimum assumptions by solving PDE-constrained optimization problems defined such that the corresponding optimal Large-Eddy Simulation best matches the Direct Numerical Simulation. The main finding is that with a fixed cutoff wavenumber $k_c$, the performance of the Large-Eddy Simulation systematically improves as the regularization in the solution of the optimization problem is reduced and this is achieved with the optimal eddy viscosities exhibiting increasingly irregular behavior with rapid oscillations. Since the optimal eddy viscosities do not converge to a well-defined limit as the regularization vanishes, we conclude that the problem of finding an optimal eddy viscosity is not in fact well posed.
The detection of binary neutron star mergers represents one of the most important astrophysical discoveries of the recent years. Due to the extreme matter and gravity conditions and the rich dynamics developed, it becomes a tremendous challenge to accurately simulate numerically all the scales present during the collision. Here we present how to study such systems by using large eddy simulations with a self-consistent subgrid-scale gradient model, that we generalized to the special relativistic case in a previous work and now extend to the general relativistic case. Adapted from nonrelativistic scenarios, the so-called gradient model allows to capture part of the effects of the hidden dynamics on the resolved scales, by means of a physically-agnostic, mathematically-based Taylor expansion of the nonlinear terms in the conservative evolution equations fluxes. We assess the validity of this approach in bounding-box simulations of the magnetic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Several resolutions and a broad range of scenarios are considered in order to carefully test the performance of the model under three crucial aspects: (i) highly curved backgrounds, (ii) jumps on the fluid density profiles and (iii) strong shocks. The results suggest our extension of the gradient subgrid-scale model to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics is a promising approach for studying binary neutron stars mergers, and potentially to other relevant astrophysical scenarios.
Chimera states have been studied in 1D arrays, and a variety of different chimera states have been found using different models. Research has recently been extended to 2D arrays but only to phase models of them. Here, we extend it to a nonphase model of 2D arrays of neurons and focus on the influence of nonlocal coupling. Using extensive numerical simulations, we find, surprisingly, that this system can show most types of previously observed chimera states, in contrast to previous models, where only one or a few types of chimera states can be observed in each model. We also find that this model can show some special chimera-like patterns such as gridding and multicolumn patterns, which were previously observed only in phase models. Further, we present an effective approach, i.e., removing some of the coupling links, to generate heterogeneous coupling, which results in diverse chimera-like patterns and even induces transformations from one chimera-like pattern to another.
