The rook monoid $R_n$ is the finite monoid whose elements are the 0-1 matrices with at most one nonzero entry in each row and column. The group of invertible elements of $R_n$ is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$. The natural extension to $R_n$ of the Bruhat-Chevalley ordering on the symmetric group is defined in cite{Renner86}. In this paper, we find an efficient, combinatorial description of the Bruhat-Chevalley ordering on $R_n$. We also give a useful, combinatorial formula for the length function on $R_n$.

We study the combinatorics of tropical hyperplane arrangements, and their relationship to (classical) hyperplane face monoids. We show that the refinement operation on the faces of a tropical hyperplane arrangement, introduced by Ardila and Develin in their definition of a tropical oriented matroid, induces an action of the hyperplane face monoid of the classical braid arrangement on the arrangement, and hence on a number of interesting related structures. Along the way, we introduce a new characterization of the types (in the sense of Develin and Sturmfels) of points with respect to a tropical hyperplane arrangement, in terms of partial bijections which attain permanents of submatrices of a matrix which naturally encodes the arrangement.
The emph{simplicial rook graph} SR(d,n) is the graph whose vertices are the lattice points in the $n$th dilate of the standard simplex in $mathbb{R}^d$, with two vertices adjacent if they differ in exactly two coordinates. We prove that the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of SR(3,n) have integral spectrum for every $n$. The proof proceeds by calculating an explicit eigenbasis. We conjecture that SR(d,n) is integral for all $d$ and $n$, and present evidence in support of this conjecture. For $n<binom{d}{2}$, the evidence indicates that the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix is $-n$, and that the corresponding eigenspace has dimension given by the Mahonian numbers, which enumerate permutations by number of
We give a combinatorial Chevalley formula for an arbitrary weight, in the torus-equivariant $K$-group of semi-infinite flag manifolds, which is expressed in terms of the quantum alcove model. As an application, we prove the Chevalley formula for anti-dominant fundamental weights in the (small) torus-equivariant quantum $K$-theory $QK_T(G/B)$ of the flag manifold $G/B$; this has been a longstanding conjecture about the multiplicative structure of $QK_T(G/B)$. Moreover, in type $A_{n-1}$, we prove that the so-called quantum Grothendieck polynomials indeed represent Schubert classes in the (non-equivariant) quantum $K$-theory $QK(SL_n/B)$; we also obtain very explicit information about the coefficients in the respective Chevalley formula.
We show that universal rigidity of a generic bar and joint framework (G,p) in the line depends on more than the ordering of the vertices. In particular, we construct examples of one-dimensional generic frameworks with the same graph and ordering of the vertices, such that one is universally rigid and one is not. This answers, in the negative, a question of Jordan and Nguyen.
We give a combinatorial Chevalley formula for an arbitrary weight, in the torus-equivariant K-theory of semi-infinite flag manifolds, which is expressed in terms of the quantum alcove model. As an application, we prove the Chevalley formula for anti-dominant fundamental weights in the (small) torus-equivariant quantum K-theory of the flag manifold G/B; this has been a longstanding conjecture about the multiplicative structure of the mentioned quantum K-theory. Moreover, in type A, we prove that the so-called quantum Grothendieck polynomials indeed represent Schubert classes in the (non-equivariant) quantum K-theory of the corresponding flag manifold.
