The goal of this paper is to calculate the trace of the composition of a Hecke correspondence and a (high enough) power of the Frobenius at a good place on the intersection cohomology of the Satake-Baily-Borel compactification of certain Shimura varieties, to stabilize the result for Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups over $mathbb{Q}$ and to give applications of this calculations using base change from these unitary groups to $GL_n$.

We investigate Siegel modular varieties in positive characteristic with Iwahori level structure. On these spaces, we have the Newton stratification, and the Kottwitz-Rapoport stratification; one would like to understand how these stratifications are related to each other. We give a simple description of all KR strata which are entirely contained in the supersingular locus as disjoint unions of Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We also give an explicit numerical description of the KR stratification in terms of abelian varieties.

Let $S$ be the special fibre of a Shimura variety of Hodge type, with good reduction at a place above $p$. We give an alternative construction of the zip period map for $S$, which is used to define the Ekedahl-Oort strata of $S$. The method employed is local, $p$-adic, and group-theoretic in nature.

Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We study the Goren-Oort stratification of the special fibers of quaternionic Shimura varieties over a place above $p$. We show that each stratum is a $(mathbb{P}^1)^N$-bundle over other quaternionic Shimura varieties (for some appropriate $N$).

We study the mod $p$-points of the Kisin-Pappas integral models of abelian type Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure. We show that if the group is quasi-split and unramified, then the mod $p$ isogeny classes are of the form predicted by the Langlands-Rapoport conjecture (c.f. Conjecture 9.2 of arXiv:math/0205022). We prove the same results for quasi-split and tamely ramified groups when their Shimura varieties are proper. The main innovation in this work is a global argument that allows us to reduce the conjecture to the case of a very special parahoric, which is handled in the appendix. This way we avoid the complicated local problem of understanding connected components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for general parahoric subgroups. Along the way, we give a simple irreducibility criterion for Ekedahl-Oort and Kottwitz-Rapoport strata.

Let Y be a non-singular projective manifold with an ample canonical sheaf, and let V be a rational variation of Hodge structures of weight one on Y with Higgs bundle E(1,0) + E(0,1), coming from a family of Abelian varieties. If Y is a curve the Arakelov inequality says that the difference of the slope of E(1,0) and the one of E(0,1) is is smaller than or equal to the degree of the canonical sheaf. We prove a similar inequality in the higher dimensional case. If the latter is an equality, as well as the Bogomolov inequality for E(1,0) or for E(0,1), one hopes that Y is a Shimura variety, and V a uniformizing variation of Hodge structures. This is verified, in case the universal covering of Y does not contain factors of rank >1. Part of the results extend to variations of Hodge structures over quasi-projective manifolds. The revised version corrects several mistakes and ambiguities, pointed out by the referee. Following suggestions of the referee the presentation of the results was improved.
