We analyze the electromagnetic scattering of massive particles with and without spin and, using the techniques of effective field theory, we isolate the leading long distance effects beyond one photon exchange, both classical and quantum mechanical. Spin-independent and spin-dependent effects are isolated and shown to have a universal structure.

We study the gravitational scattering of massive particles with and without spin in the effective theory of gravity at one loop level. Our focus is on long distance effects arising from nonanalytic components of the scattering amplitude and we show that the spin-independent and the spin-dependent long range components exhibit a universal form. Both classical and quantum corrections are obtained, and the definition of a proper second order potential is discussed.
Using the methods of effective field theory we examine long range effects in mixed electromagnetic-gravitational scattering. Recent calculations which have yielded differing results for such effects are examined and corrected. We consider various spin configurations of the scattered particles and find that universality with respect to spin-dependence is obtained in agreement with expectations.
We apply renormalisation-group methods to two-body scattering by a combination of known long-range and unknown short-range potentials. We impose a cut-off in the basis of distorted waves of the long-range potential and identify possible fixed points of the short-range potential as this cut-off is lowered to zero. The expansions around these fixed points define the power countings for the corresponding effective field theories. Expansions around nontrivial fixed points are shown to correspond to distorted-wa
We present the complete first order relativistic quantum kinetic theory with spin for massive fermions derived from the Wigner function formalism in a concise form that shows explicitly how the 32 Wigner equations reduce to 4 independent transport equations. We solve modified on-shell conditions to obtain the general solution and present the corresponding transport equations in three different forms that are suitable for different purposes. We demonstrate how different spin effects arise from the kinetic theory by calculating the chiral separation effect with mass correction, the chiral anomaly from the axial current and the quantum magnetic moment density induced by vorticity and magnetic field. We also show how to generate the global polarization effect due to spin vorticity coupling. The formalism presented may serve as a practical theoretical framework to study different spin effects in relativistic fermion systems encountered in different areas such as heavy ion, astro-particle and condensed matter physics as well.

Unparticles as suggested by Georgi are identities that are not constrained by dispersion relations but are governed by their scaling dimension, d. Their coupling to particles can result in macroscopic interactions between matter, that are generally an inverse nonintegral power of distance. This is totally different from known macroscopic forces. We use the precisely measured long-ranged spin-spin interaction of electrons to constrain unparticle couplings to the electron. For 1<d<1.5 the axial vector unparticle coupling is excluded; and for 1<d<1.3 the pseudoscalar and vector couplings are also ruled out. These bounds and the ones for other ranges of d exceed or are complementary to those obtained previously from exotic positronium decays.
