We investigated temperature dependent Raman spectra of the one-dimensional spin-ladder compound SrCu2O3. At low temperatures a two-magnon peak is identified at 3160+/-10 cm^(-1) and its temperature dependence analyzed in terms of a thermal expansion model. We find that the two-magnon peak position must include a cyclic ring exchange of J_cycl/J_perp=0.09-0.25 with a coupling constant along the rungs of J_perp approx. 1215 cm^(-1) (1750 K) in order to be consistent with other experiments and theoretical results.

Using Raman spectroscopy, we investigate the lattice phonons, magnetic excitations, and magneto-elastic coupling in the distorted triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet alpha-SrCr2O4, which develops helical magnetic order below 43 K. Temperature dependent phonon spectra are compared to predictions from density functional theory calculations which allows us to assign the observed modes and identify weak effects arising from coupled lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom. Raman scattering associated with two-magnon excitations is observed at 20 meV and 40 meV. These energies are in general agreement with our ab-initio calculations of exchange interactions and earlier theoretical predictions of the two-magnon Raman response of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets. The temperature dependence of the two-magnon excitations indicates that spin correlations persist well above the Neel temperature.
We have investigated the phonon and the magnetic excitations in LaCoO3 by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The acoustic phonon dispersions show some characteristic features of the folded Brillouin zone (BZ) for the rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure containing two chemical formula units of LaCoO3 in the unit cell. We observed two transverse optical (TO) phonon branches along (delta, delta, delta), consistent with previously reported Raman active Eg modes which show remarkable softening associated with the spin-state transition [Ishikawa et al., (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 136401.)]. We found that the softening takes place in the TO mode over the whole BZ. In contrast, the acoustic phonons show no anomalous softening associated with the spin-state transition. The low-energy paramagnetic scattering at 8 K is weak, increasing towards a maximum at E > 15 meV, consistent with excitation of the nonmagnetic low-spin to magnetic intermediate-spin state of Co 3+ ions.
Raman scattering experiments on LaFeAsO with splitted antiferromagnetic (T_AFM = 140 K) and tetragonal-orthorhombic (T_S = 155 K) transitions show a quasi-elastic peak (QEP) in B2g symmetry (2 Fe tetragonal cell) that fades away below ~T_AFM and is ascribed to electronic nematic fluctuations. A scaling of the reported shear modulus with the T-dependence of the QEP height rather than the QEP area indicates that magnetic degrees of freedom drive the structural transition. The large separation between T_S and T_AFM in LaFeAsO compared with their coincidence in BaFe2As2 manifests itself in slower dynamics of nematic fluctuations in the former.
We have investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore iridates Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using a combination of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, x-ray powder diffraction, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The structural parameters of Eu2Ir2O7 have been examined as a function of temperature and applied pressure, with a particular emphasis on regions of the phase diagram where electronic and magnetic phase transitions have been reported. We find no evidence of crystal symmetry change over the range of temperatures (~6 to 300 K) and pressures (~0.1 to 17 GPa) studied. We have also investigated the electronic and magnetic excitations in single crystal samples of Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using high resolution Ir L3-edge RIXS. In spite of very different ground state properties, we find these materials exhibit qualitatively similar excitation spectra, with crystal field excitations at ~3-5 eV, spin-orbit excitations at ~0.5-1 eV, and broad low-lying excitations below ~0.15 eV. In Eu2Ir2O7 we observe highly damped magnetic excitations at ~45 meV, which display significant momentum dependence. We compare these results with recent dynamical structure factor calculations.
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements mapping the in-plane magnetic interactions of Na0.5CoO2 reveal dispersive excitations at points above an energy gap Eg = 11.5(5) meV at the superstructural Bragg reflections. The excitations are highly damped, broadening with increasing energy, and disappear at hw ~ 35 meV, a strong indication that the magnetism is itinerant. Tilting into the ac plane reduces the value of Eg by 25%, suggesting that the dispersion along c is significant and the magnetic correlations are three-dimensional, as seen at the higher doping levels.
